I miss running

have you tried running with Vibram 5 fingers? I started having knee problems with regular running shoes, but these cleared the problem up completely. They force your feet to move naturally, without using the heel of Your foot.

Except for actual races, I generally ran barefoot.

I've seen some people with those, but they're more than a bit spendy for me.

My own knees are showing signs of stiffness. Any advice concerning improving my joints is welcome.

Not sure about stiffness, but for aches ginger is helpful. When I'm going to be extra active, I pack along a batch of Reed's Extra Ginger Ginger Brew (ginger beer). Raw ginger is better, really -- it doesn't have the calories of the brew.
 
I went hiking in some dunes today. On the really sandy trails I can make it to a slow jog because loose dry sand is a superb cushion, so I got some jogging in. On the steep down slopes, I actually got some running!

Of course Bammer always thought I was still too slow.

I went through that with soccer: my shin bones kept crumbling just from running on them (until I learned to run differently), and a doctor giving me a physical for soccer asked me how I would feel about having a hundred pieces of bone between my ankle and knee in my first game. Sucked.
