I can't afford to pay Martin for more than one session a week, but I'm finding it hard to keep motivated to go on my own.

But in the eighteen-odd months I've been going, I haven't managed to exchange more than half a dozen words with anyone else there.

Yeah, I know, it's another "winter's being an antisocial idiot" thread. But this is something specific that I'm working towards here so at least that's a bit better.

Anyway, any thoughts?

(Note to Harke: no sex suggestions, thanks.)

Is there a bulletin board there? Can you put up a "looking for workout partner" flier?

Gyms aren't exactly the best places to begin a conversation, yano.

Your potential gym partner is bound to be someone who goes there at the same time you do and talking to him is a necessary first step; there's not really any way around it.

Asking somebody a question is usually a good start. In a gym there are lots of possibilities for questions.

I agree. Ask Martin. Tell him you wish you could afford to pay him to be there 24/7, but you need assistance to keep going when he's not there.

BTW. Is Martin hot?

when my buddy who i sparred with moved away - i put up a piece of paper in my gym on the bulletin board saying i wanted a gym/sparring partner who works out 3-5 days a week in the mid afternoons and i got 10 or so phone calls. had a new gym partner in a week.

there's other guys at your gym in your situation.

The gym doesn't have a notice board. I checked.

I spent half of last friday's session with M. just chatting about stuff. No direct ideas on this issue, though :(

Well, yes they are, yano ;)

Why not try a different gym? Do you have YMCA near you? They are usually a good bet to find like-minded individuals.

The only other decently equipped one within ten miles is a hardcore bodybuilding club. Not really my speed. And changing would mean I'd have to stop using Martin, who has actually been more help than I think he realizes.

But it just seems like everyone there is wrapped up in their own thing, and there's some unspoken rule about not intruding unless you came in together. I tried saying "Hi" to a a few people on Sunday, but no response that I noticed.
