go for it with enthusiasm and passion. beggers cant choose. what options do you have left?

just remember, this is temporary. its not your life. its the beginning of a fabulous life.

You can always give it a try and decide later whether it's for you or not. Good luck!

Oh, and I can't sale stuff either.

go here for your tie: http://www.neckties.com/content/howtotieatie.html

select 'simple double.' it isn't too hard and looks sharp.

as for the job, just go in there and do your best. right now you're just trying it on for size. if it isn't to your liking you can always look for something else.

good luck! :)

Just go in drunk and wow them with a song and some jazz hands. Works everytime.

Um.. you realize that this is probably a scam, right?

"If you were paid to move to California would you move there?" is pretty much the give away. Just in case you didn't know.. there's plenty of people here looking for work with LOTS of sales experience. So it's not like there's a shortage here and they have to bus people in.

On The Job training to sell things in the street sounds dodgy at best.

Tread carefully.

Advice welcomed.
I dunnooo...
:/ sorry guys.

^ Jasun has a point Epic... be carefull and investigate this guy as best you can...

So heres hoping that is legit... first and foremost... buy, read, download or borrow a copy of the book "how to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carneige. It was written a while ago so the language is a little old fashioned but its simple, easy to read, fairly short and it will be the best tool you have.

The simple secret to selling is this - shut up and listen, and actually care about the clients needs. Do that mate and you will be the most successful guy around. I seriously cant recommend that book enough... and I've sold, managed and owned business's all my life.

Theres nothing evil in most sales Epic... usually, most of the time you actually help the client meet their own needs and steer them in the right direction. However if you find yourself in a job thats doing exactly the opposite - pushing things onto people they dont want or need, learn quick, use the training on offer, pick the eyes out of whats good or bad about it and move on.

The reality sales jobs will always be there and often in the right company lead to management roles and more. Take what you can get right now - and use it to your advantage mate... its that simple.

Jasun's right. In this economy, if a business is as sound as he claims, he can hire really experienced salesfolk off the street for nothing. Then he can train them (without pay) for a day or two, and away he goes. If he's looking to hire a guy with no sales experience with the idea of eventually relocating him to California, he's obviously looking for people who won't know what they're getting into. Honest salesfolk (and yes, there are such things) would be too wise to sign on.

I'll train you. I'll make commission off your sales. You train 3-5 people, you make commission off their sales. They train 3-5 people, they get commission off their sales, and you get commission off their sales. Classic pyramid scheme. Run. Run quickly.

If you want to go into to sales, pick a product you can stand behind. It will sell itself.

I am in the same job search boat as you - and I have gotten a few calls like that - and they wanted me to be a financial planner. Keep in mind that I was to start out on a commission basis only and had to pass the series 7 and 66 exams to be fully licensed. Also got calls from insurance companies trying to sell insurance. Be very careful of these sales companies - many of them are just pyramid schemes.

Even if this is a scam and you need to keep job-hunting, you should at least master the skill of tying a tie.

LOOOL

U'll do fine bitch, if someone can do it, you can..
ahahaha

allez hope its going well

But i need a job... badly.
He's talking about opening offices, paid training,
he's looking for people to train so that they can train others eventually and spread the buisness.
But that means time needs to be spent doing the selling itself, obviously.
Asking me if i'd wanna relocate and stuff.

I smell a rat already. He trains you so that you can train others to spread the business? This sounds like some pyramid scheme to me.

If you take nothing else from this, at least GL and gmoney explained tying a tie.

Best of luck with the job search! Seriously.

You're the smart one. it's NOT going to work for anyone.. they're getting duped. They're still going to be broke and bitter in three years.

Sorry you had to waste time... but yeah... I've never been caught up by that but I can always tell when someone is being duped.

Just remember..

1. There is no such thing as "free money."

2. There is no job that allows you to retire in three years and never have to work again. Even the guy who invented the Snuggie has to work pretty hard to keep the business going.

3. If it's too good to be true.. it is.

4. When they start to talk about your distant future... it's just a way to keep you involved in the scam for longer.

5. When they start to talk about things like "would you relocate to a place that EVERYONE wants to live?" or "would you be ok with taking this beautiful company car for free?" or "we give all our staff iPhones and laptops... you can keep them but you only get a new one every two years so you have to look after it" or "we have a travel budget of $10,000 per trip so if you want, you can book in smaller hotels and pocket the difference..." Run. You're being scammed.

This thread title made me think of

"I rock peas on my head but don't call me a Peahead
Bees on my head but don't call me a Beehead."

I'd like to congratulate everyone who gave their best, honest, open advice to Epic. I've been thru the job search a few times in my life.

I also worked for an inside sales organization "between" my regular career as a purchasing professional --
A point of perspective - We're ALL in sales -- either selling a product/service of our company, or selling ourselves to people so they believe in us and will hire us, or, as in my case, selling my company on prospective vendors to get the best price and terms on materials we want to purchase from them.

There was a lot of sound advice from everyone here. My tenure with the inside sales organization was interesting - they were serious about offering training - both generalized sales training and specific product training. But, it was geared toward an almost boiler room type operation - it wasn't - they had legitimate customers and sold legitimate products - but the working conditions were rows of 5' sections of partitions/desk tops.

Target salary in the low 20's as compared to where I was before one job disappeared when the son of the chairman of the board decided to reinvent the company in his own image. Virtually everyone in middle and upper sales, excepte for a couple of people in sales, were gone within 2 years. Wasn't a nice situation, and he's not a nice person.

Anyway, there is education to be had in even the shadiest of deals - it's all in how you look at the situation. You did well in walking away. Now, keep that charged up persona, believe in yourself, and go sell yourself!

Good Luck.
Been there/done that.
