To start I don't have the funds to join a gym...I really wish I did but for now I don't. I do have a membership to an aquatics center and I do try to go swimming but one lap and I feel like I'm about to die. We have a treadmill and an elliptical and some 30lb weights. But my main problem is how do I do anything for more than 5mins without feeling dizzy and lightheaded? Everything I've seen or read say that the minimum time spent working out should be 45mins to an hour but 5mins and my body shuts down. Also are there any alternatives to push ups? Whenever I get into push up position or plank when I'm doing yoga my wrists feel like they're about to snap.

Sounds like you have a problem with endurance. So, try walking around your neighborhood. Gradually increase the pace as you become more acclimated to it.

You know what the weird thing is? When I go rollerskating I can skate for 1.5 maybe 2hrs before I have to stop and rest or they call for all girls or couples skate ect. I usually only take one or two breaks and get some water. But when I try to jog I just can't do it. I just wish I could go more often but I can't :(

At first I thought maybe there was something amiss that might need a doctor's opinion, but then you posted the above.

The difference is, with the skating you are using (mainly) your legs - your arms are in use only for balance. Swimming uses every muscle in your body and it's by far the best overall workout you will ever get, anywhere. mbamike has a valid point: You need to work on endurance. So, next time, push that 1 lap to 1-1/2 laps. Do this on a daily basis. Then each week, increase it by another 1/2 lap. Build up gradually to ten full laps.

Another thing...if I can skate for a long period of time with minimum problems then why can't I jog/run? Both uses your legs.

Endurance takes time to build. If you haven't been swimming in a while and don't do aerobic exercise on a regular basis, then it will take time for you to get into good cardiovascular condition again.

An aerobics instructor once told me that it takes about 18 months to return to peak aerobic condition. So, if you're trying to start with swimming a long period of time, you're setting unreasonable goals which are just going to make you get discouraged.

Slow down and work to more realistic goals.

Start slow. Do 5 minutes. of swimming Rest. Do another 5 minutes. If you get light-headed, go to the shallow end of the pool and rest before starting again.

You should add brisk walking or treadmill. Start with no incline and do 15-20 minutes to start. Add more incline and increase the length of time.

If you are not able to build endurance after several weeks, you should see your doctor for a physical to ensure that there isn't a physical cause.

Again, jogging and running are not the same as skating. I used to rollerskate for 3 hours on Fri nights and ice skate for 3 hours on Sat nights - every week for a number of years. If you really concentrate on your body as you do these activities, you will realize the different muscle groups being used and the amount of effort needed for each one.

During a run/jog your arms are pumping alongside your body to maintain momentum as well as balance. Your legs and body are in constant motion, the pulmonary gets a real workout as well.

When we skate, we use our legs to push us along, arms are used for momentum, yes, but more for balance. We have long periods of gliding along on the ice, or rolling along the wood. Those short periods allow our bodies to rest.

If you want the same workout while skating: Mimic a routine as you might see an Olympic skater go through; constant motion for a good straight 6 to 10 minutes.

I guess so...when I skate I don't really glide too much but I'll keep at the brisk walks and the run/jogging and hopefully I'll get used to it. I have a friend that is an absolute machine when it comes to running...he's faster than his dog....crazy bastard. Another question, should I try to swim and run daily or every other day or what? I heard that it's not good to exercise daily but I don't know. I hear so many different things. What do you suggest?
