... Now that I finally have a job that will allow me to afford having roommates or even better a studio.

Living in the burbs is not the place to live for a 20 something gay guy and it takes me a hour each way to get into the city. Plus, I've lived with my aunt and uncle for over a year now; way too long in my book and probably caused me to miss out on some opportunities and experiences if I lived in the city- the gay dating pool is larger there after all and I probably would have met more guys my age by now.

Thinking about Brooklyn, Queens and Hoboken (yes, Jersey- but it's less expensive and crowded across the river) Anyone seeking a roommate? (I'm actually half serious about that) :-)

Anyone have any interesting stories of when they were starting out in the city (or a city)?

Well, I want to live in the city, too. I currently do attend college in the middle of the city, so that's nice.
But good luck with that! ^.^

What's funny is, I live in a "suburb" generally more expensive than the city. I could probably find a place near my work for about $400/month cheaper than my current apartment but to give up this prestigious address at the current rate would be a crime. My commute is about 40 mins by train and it sucks but the location of my apt. People would pay about $1k more a month for it than what I currently do.

3 choices IMO

Manhattan share - where the action is - less space/privacy to live - more about going out

Bklyn - ck out Bushwick - neighbors Williamsburg which has exploded with manhattan like pricing (overrated) - better if u work downtown

Queens - LIC is on the come - lacking in infrastructure but trending up
Astoria is wonderful - better if u work midtown/uptown

One thing about manhattan - if you live way uptown - Harlem ish - you're further away in many cases than Bklyn + Queens

Great news !!!

I actually have Hoboken on my "short list" of places that I feel I could consider retiring to. I really like that place, as well as its convenience! There are fewer than ten places on the entire short list.

Very happy to hear that you have a decent job now, too!

Hey Bryan, Bushwick?

Isn't that still a not so safe place? Not as bad as Crown Heights but still not that safe at night IMO. However I hear it is becoming like the new Williamsburg, which is another area I'm not a fan of either (one visit to Bedford Ave was enough for me).

I haven't checked out Astoria yet but it's on my list of Queens nabes that I'd move to, before it becomes too expensive to live there. I did view an apartment in Flushings last weekend... it's not really my kind of area and the commute was longer than I'd like.

frankfrank, Hoboken is indeed a nice area right next to NYC but it has a good small(ish) town feel.

A lot of people don't like it simply because it's Jersey but they've probably never been there. It's a pretty gay friendly area too and has a nice young vibe. Plus the views of Manhattan are some of the best in town, 10 minutes into Manhattan on the PATH. It's one area high on my list of potential neighborhoods, a heck of a lot better than living at my aunt and uncles house way up here in the Westchester burbs.

Glad I got a job too finally but the company might be in financial trouble, times are tough even for businesses. More motivation to work for myself. :-)

Bushwick is the new Williamsburg - check it out - sure there are block by block situations - but ......... if you're on a budget

Flushing is the suburbs in my opinion - plus lacking in diversity as it has a very dominant cultural community (near the Flushing main line 7 train) which does not provide the rainbow of cultures that many areas have and which i love

You don't like williamsburg? sure too many hipsters but it is HOT HOT HOT - the rents are outa control so i think the time to go there has passed

Astoria I like because the commute is fabulous and the area itself is very cool - so no need to go to manhattan but u can - last night i was in HK and took a cab home after (130a) and it was $20

I would ck your demos - my understand from people who live there and my visiting is that Hoboken is not at all gay friendly - and it's tiny - and the area near the path IMO is not the place you'd want to live - the area a bus ride away is nicer

not looking to offend Hobokenites - but that's my take

check out LIC

would be happy to show you around
