s'up homies? :p

here's the situation:

i got a new laptop

!!!! WOOOHOOO !!!!! (!)

but i need to keep windoze on it 'cuz my professors was certain pieces of software that don't exist in the linux world.

BOOOOOO!!!

i used to keep a windows firewall around, but the damned thing keeps causing a memory violation error. (i've already tried many things to fix it, but to no avail).

so here's the thing: i know there are many free firewalls out there; but i don't know which ones to use.

i need your opinions about your firewalls and why you like 'em.

pretty please!!!

I use Zone Alarm, and yes, they still have a basic version that is free - and it seems very effective.

I remember having Zone Alarm and it gave me so many problems that I just went to something else. But maybe they fixed all the problems. I'm afraid to get it and start having the same problems again.

i just use the windows one...maybe i shouldn't be? looks like everyone else (except brandon ;) ) likes zone alarm.

I used it back in the days, but when it got too weird and started to crash some of my Instant Messenger programs I just uninstalled it, PLUS! It was a pain in the ass too as it left behind tons of stuff on my computer when I wanted it uninstalled.

i'm not really fond about zonealarm either. but since sygate went out of business i don't know any better free solution. so that's what i install the people.
personally, i don't use neither firewall nor virus scanner ;)

i can't believe you just told me to try linux on my laptop! ;)

i was converted to the path of operating system enlightenment and digital truth years ago; so OF COURSE i would use it on my new laptop. hell, linux friendly and no microsoft tax was the reason i chose this laptop.

it runs elive and it runs well; the only thing that doesn't work is sleep and suspend

no, i have to use windows because my professors want me to use specific vhdl and assembly environments that are extremely linux un-friendly. so i dusted off an old windows xp disk i had lying around, installed it in my machine (dual booted with elive) and now (without a firewall) it's as naked as the day it was born (which was a few days ago)

BTW, I think JUB needs a penguin smiley!

amen to that!!

maybe a certain linux-user-german-moderator-who-names-himself-after-a-vegetable can champion the cause for us. ;)

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who had problems with Zonealarm, I think I used Zonealarm with Windows ME, and that fucked my computer up so badly I had to do a system recover on it.

i used vhdl simili from symphony eda when i needed vhdl for my computing controlled machines class. runs like a charm :)

T-Rexx,

When I (using my Mod abilities) hit the "Edit" button and view your post - alll the image tags you posted are there - but they didn't display for me either.

Being totally "non geek" I have no idea why - but I can assure you that no-one tampered with/removed them - just seems to be some sort of glitch?

*EDIT* Uh - dummy me - I just saw your comment about your gallery - can't answer that one I'm afraid...
