I don't believe you. You say you've dropped the relationship/sex thing in favor of being his friend, but you're still looking for any tiny excuse to think that, even to the point of asking us to confirm it.

We don't know, he's given you an answer, you don't want to accept it. That's not being a friend.

Most best friendship are those that do not have or can not have sex involved. Consider the gay guy whose best friend is a girl. They can share all the secrets and not feel vulnerable. Or the pretense of being more or less than who you are is gone or lessened.

Your friend can be a close friend because there is no sexual tension or need to be macho. Sometimes, you can tell a friend more than you can a significant other as you feel you have a certain posture / role that needs to be maintained. I think he is glad to have a true friend. I'm sorry you are not.
