I saw it, and as a teacher in the Bronx, it's what we deal with everyday. I really loved the movie and found myself crying at a few parts (i'm a wuss).

It's wierd to see that on the big screen because it's definitely the way things really are here at my school.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It shows the school system as it really is. The administration in it... I know them all too well.

I haven't yet, but thanks for the good reviews. I'll try to see it some time this week.

Also a teacher, I find the previews WAY too idealistic to get interested. People have no idea what we deal with, and we have no power to completly change the curriculum, or the world for that matter. Cynical=me, I know. But I do love my job.

I can't wait to get the album! "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio is the shit. I think I'll go see Dangerous Minds!

Oh wait.....this is a different movie isn't it....sorry my bad....

I was kind of dubious but went because I love Hilary Swank - and I loved it - I'd suggest going even if you roll your eyes at the previews, it's really well done and incredibly moving (I had to fight to keep from crying several times, I'm a wuss too!), and it's based on a true story...really inspiring whether you're a teacher or not, a great human story.

I wouldn't teachers have no power to change things, they just believe they don't and don't make any attempts to do so. The movie was based on a true story and the teacher in it was able to talk to the people and change how she ran things and how she taught the kids in her classroom. I've had inspirational teachers who cared about their students and made efforts to try to help change their life for the better and some who hate kids and just tried to fail as many students as possible.

Yes, you're right--I hate kids and fail them at every chance possible. Um, whatever. I cannot change No Child Left Behind requirements. You have no idea what you're talking about. I'm a great teacher, and won teacher of the year for my state. My kids value me. All I'm saying is it's impossible to design your own curriculum in a high school English class. The story is true, but it was years ago, when teachers had more freedom in curriculum.

MrJason and Surge- you're both correct. As a teacher (and curriculum expert), you cannot just throw out the prescribed curriculum. However, you do have the ability to teach the curriculum in whatever way you see fit.

I teach math. There are many things I teach from various sources or from my own experience because it's the easiest and most simiplistic way of explaining a difficult subject matter. Then there are days I tell my kids to drag out the book, because it explains a certain topic the best way I've seen. It's a matter of knowing how and when to pick your battles. Our district curriculum coordinator and I go round and round because I don't use the book every day. I tell her to look at my results and shut up. My kids do far better than the other middle schools' students that follow the prescribed curriculum to a T.

Um, are you really a teacher? Can you read? You totally misunderstood what I was saying. I don't understand how you could be offended by it when I never called you anything.

I'm a fake teacher, and I can't read. Correct again! Any teacher would take offense to your gross generalizations that we're lazy and fail students every chance we get.

I agree. Good teachers teach the curriculum, but find engaging ways to do so.

MrJason, you really need to calm down. No one accused you of being a poor teacher until you labeled yourself so. No one is using this thread to bash teachers in general or you specifically.

The discussion in this thread needs to remain on the topic of the movie.
