So I was watching Logo and they mentioned that Cindy Lauper wrote True Colors after her sister, who is a lesbian. This gives me a whole new look at that song. Seems so obvious now.... So strange how something can be right in front of you and not even notice it. (*8*) It makes me wonder what other songs there may be.

True Colors Lyrics
by Cindy Lauper

You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Oh I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

Show me a smile then,
Don't be unhappy, can't remember
When I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
You call me up
Because you know I'll be there

And I'll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow

Very interesting bit of information.

"Like a rainbow..."

Excellent...I always interpreted that song that way for obvious reasons (it was relevant to me).

I love Cyndi, but I "discovered her" too late...

I''ve always loved that song.
And I just read a very Jasun-like quote from Cyndi:

I always feel that it is wrong to be that depressed about who you are. I saw my [lesbian] sister go through it. So when I stand there and sing True Colors, it's no longer my song. It's everybody's song. When I stood there and waved my hand [at the Bell Centre], it meant power to the people. Because they stood up for themselves. It's not about me.

Errm... according to Wikipedia and Songfacts, it wasn't written by Cyndi at all, but by Billy Steinberg about his mother....
Well then, at least the quotation I posted shows what she took as the meaning of the song. No one really cares about the people who write pop songs in the background :p.

Beautiful song.

That, along with Time After Time are my two favorite Cyndi songs.

She hit the music scene around the same time as Madonna, if memory serves, and I always liked Cyndi more.

Yes, YES, YES!!!!!

Cyndi always was (and still is) a class act. :D

by the way, I've always wanted to kick Phil Collins hard in the balls for his par-boiled, dull, lifeless and Craptastical cover version.

If he had gone out of his way to make a more dull and wretched cover of that song, he couldn't have done it unless he added a pan flute.

What a dork.

I''ve always loved that song.

Wow your a surprising man Soilwork, whiodathunk. Thank goodness for the Phil Collins part though, it shows that you haven't gone all completely warm and fuzzy!

Ruby;2066224( but I prefer the Phil Collins version)[/QUOTE said:
well i prefer Kasey Chambers version but it probably because ive heard it alot more

OMG, nobody's mentioned the masturbation song, She Bop

We-hell-I see them every night in tight blue jeans--
In the pages of a blue boy magazine
Hey I've been thinking of a new sensation
I'm picking up--good vibration--
Oop--she bop--

Do I wanna go out with a lion's roar
Huh, yea, I wanna go south n get me some more
Hey, they say that a stitch in time saves nine
They say I better stop--or I'll go blind
Oop--she bop--she bop

She bop--he bop--a--we bop
I bop--you bop--a--they bop
Be bop--be bop--a--lu--she bop,
I hope He will understand
She bop--he bop--a--we bop
I bop--you bop--a--they bop
Be bop--be bop--a--lu--she bop,
Oo--oo--she--do--she bop--she bop

(whistle along here)...

Hey, hey--they say I better get a chaperone
Because I can't stop messin' with the danger zone
No, I won't worry, and I won't fret--
Ain't no law against it yet--
Oop--she bop--she bop--

She bop--he bop--we bop...

Maybe its for "everyone".

Indeed she did say that herself:
So when I stand there and sing True Colors, it's no longer my song. It's everybody's song.
Still nothing like the original...

The other versions may sometimes be good generic pop songs, but the artistry really is in Cyndi's version (maybe because of her "raw" approach to everything).

Love Cindi and love that song. Your info will make it even more special next time I hear it.
