and now the LCD screen is cracked...

#-o

Its still operational thank goodness, but there is two spikes from the top middle right that descend down into the screen, and huge thumbprint sized black blob at the top.

Not sure if £60 - £80 for a new LCD screen is worth it for this 3.75 yr old machine. I saw a tutorial online and a video for my model which looks quite easy to do.

(seems to have no sound...)

Should I get a new computer instead?

eBay often has non-functional laptops sold for parts. 80 quid sounds pretty reasonable for a just screen, though!

I agree, £80 does not seem unreasonable, and you should be able to do the work yourself.

They are actually quite easy to replace yourself. You can go on ehow.com for step by step instructions for your particular laptop. I did this when I replaced my laptop keyboard. Real simple and saved a lot of money not going to a computer repair place.

Ha ha, you too? I got a new screen on ebay for ~£40 and replaced it myself. It was quite easy actually, but I guess it depends on a particular model.

I finally replaced the screen myself! Yay! Everything is looking brighter now.

As my luck would have it, I reinstalled RealPlayer and just kept clicking ok when it was asking to install and got a nasty case of adware. It was called DealPly, and I used malwarebytes to get rid of it. There were some 189 various items found, and once it was removed, it was still lurking as an add-on in Mozilla Firefox, but disabling it worked.

When I rebooted the computer and logged into my user account everything seemed ok for a few minutes, then the dreaded BSOD. Turns out I needed to do a chkdsk /f /r and also a start up in safe mode to remove, wait for it, realplayer, and malwarebytes.

So folks, when installing stuff watch out for nasty additions. On the upside, my screen looks marvellous. I'll have keep my feet off it from now on...

Yeah, your lappy is on the cusp of what I would consider laptop obsolescence [4 years]. I dunno if you put money aside for a new to one at all but it would be something to consider too besides getting a new screen. I would wager that your HDD is still in tact and you can always link up a monitor to get stuff off it.

It's just for surfing and chatting on the net. No gaming, or serious coding projects to compile and run, it works fairly well. As for saving up for a new one, lets say I don't need to :) Well, not until the bairn needs one for school homework anyway. I'll invest in a desktop so he can't have it in his room watching Annoying Orange all day.
