I don't know if the guys will be finding this spot or not - it appeared on my FB wall and was Colombia, so . . .

Welcome to "Science Island"
WWF's Molly Edmonds experiences the realities of fieldwork on Gorgona Island in Colombia

WWF started working here in 2006 on sea turtle and coral reef fish monitoring, and a few years later we became scientific advisors for the park. Only recently we started our turtle tagging program, which I am here to observe.

The island is named after the mythological women with snakes for hair; there are 20 snake species found here (four of them venomous).

Cheers for the feedback guys, And I see you lurking there. Talk to me!

I haven't done an update for a while, SO here it is

Weekend before last we climbed Monserrate, The mountain that dominates Bogota's skyline. At the top there is a Church, a few homestyle food places and a small market. The mountain itself sits at an altitude of about 3150 meters above sea level. That a climb of 750m from bogotas average of 2600m asl. So as you can imagine from someone used to living at 0m it was a pretty gruelling climb. By the time I got to the top I felt as though I had been riding one of those vicious spinning carnival rides. Very dizzy.

Fortunately it wore off quickly, and we were able to join in the end of a service in the monastary that is the focal point of the mountain. It looks pretty spectacular from below, but its also hard to catch on a phone camera haha. We then had a wander around looking in the market and getting a traditional dessert of cheese topped with caramel and blackberries, as well as checking out the ruins of the church that stood before.

After this refreshing break and taking in the amazing views from so high up we went back down, which was so much easier than ascending hahaha.

Here are some piccys:

So it's been a good few weeks since I last posted so I have a bit to cover. But I'll stick to the interesting stuff.

Ok so first destination is cathedral de sal. Formerly a salt mine, converted into a giant underground religious complex. This place is a labyrinth of dark corridors and coloured lights. Its really an amazing place and the scale of some of the architecture is insane. The primary chamber (which is quite a trek through the tunnels) Is gigantic, but the most spectacular part is the lead up. Walking through an almost pitch black tunnel with a light at the end, and the closer you come, the clearer it is that you are entering a giant chamber with an illuminated cross the size of a three story building.

Anyway here are the pics:

We Have also been taking trips out to explore the north eastern branch of the Andes mountain range in a national park called chingaza. The geography there is so beautiful, like none I have ever seen before. Just looking at the mountains you can literally see where they have been thrust up out of the earth. The park is also full of naitive history, as well as some pretty cool wildlife. We have seen plenty of deer and birds, as well as a spectacled bear (who ran away really quickly :() But there is also supposed to be puma and ocelots.

My photography doesn't really do the place justice.

I know right? And look at those quads! He came out buff and ready to go. (Whoever sculpted it must have a secret boner for him hahaha)

I so didn't even notice that until it was pointed out... that baby Jesus is friggin chiselled.

Taz,
Thanks for the update! Those are great pics.
And, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought baby Jesu was a bit "mature" in his anatomy!

The salt mine church is one way to "get religion" - get you down there and turn the lights off on you - wait long enough and you'd be praying "let there be light"!

That sounds like a bucket list item... the tunnel to the light sounds amazing. I wanna do it.....

^was thinking the same thing, baby Jesus on 'roids.

Taz,

Thank you for all the updates.
Some very impressive and stunning shots.
You've truly got a good photographer's eye. (are you keeping it in a jar?)
