Is it customary among African-American churches for there to be an open casket at the funeral?
I ask because I remember a few years back when James Brown died, there was (for me) the wierdest and creepiest thing of seeing his dead body in a coffin while performers up on stage 'sung down' in tribute, almost serenading him in a way. I dunno, I found it a bit bizarre, lol.
Is that Pentecostal? I should be asking all this over on the Religion forum.

It's really striking for me, the HUGE difference there is between the joyous music and celebration of the black American choirs, versus the dreadfully serious mournful dirge of a Scottish Free Presbyterian service like the ones I've attended at home.
They really couldn't be any more different in mood and tone. Not that I myself am religious at all, but you can't help but think that a happy celebration of someone's life is a better way of going than having a harsh old minister give a dark Biblical sermon of utter despair like I've had to hear for too many relatives.

I want a bagpiper outside playing "Amazing Grace" and during the service I want someone to sing the old hymn "Come to the Church in the Wildwood." That was my favorite when I sang in the the junior choir at my church.
