.....out of Ohio. I hate it here! I would like to move to Upper State New York (mainly because it is closer to Toronto....long story for another time). I had originally looked at Buffalo NY, but then found out that (economically and such) it is just as bad as Cleveland, Ohio. (both are in the top 10 worst cities in the U.S. to live in.) I am now very seriously considering Rochester, NY. I have lately heard from relatives, and others, that it is a nice place to live. I looked up on-line (thru Youtube, Wiki, and google images) and much about the place, and it seems perfect for me. (there is a city, but not too big like NYC, and not too small and empty, like Buffalo) I love the look of it, and it seems to be the perfect mixture of city and suburbs. I also like that it seems close to the lake, like Cleveland. (Here, it's Lake Erie, as opposed to Lake Ontario).
NOW I need to find out where it is best to settle. As in Cleveland I am sure, there are trendy and not so trendy places to live. So, I need JUB members to help me from here, and give their input. Is there anyone here who either lives in/near there now....or has lived there in the past that can give me their personal insight into the area? Economy? Job prospects? Mall? Bars? Cool places to hang out? Pics of the area? Does Rochester even HAVE a gay neighborhood? Any info is appreciated. THANKS! ;)
 
The way things are, I would make sure you can actually make a living there or wherever you decide to move. Make sure your skills match the needs of the market.

The only thing I can tell you about Rochester is that I have an old friend who use to live there and worked for Kodak. Rochester was once a great area economically because it was the home of Eastman Kodak. The company employed a vast number of the people that lived there. When Kodak went down, (a victim of the digital camera) so did a lot of jobs and the local economy, which is when my friend left the area.

How close to Lake Ontario is Rochester? (Cleveland is right off of Lake Erie...I can be on the beach within 15 minutes from many different points around here.)

Actually I have a bit of an obsession with Toronto. I visited it for the first time almost 10 years ago, where a friend of mine from here now lives, and fell in love with it. I went once or twice a year for a few years, but now am too broke to travel so far on a regular basis. (Also no Visa yet, due to $$ issues). It will be cheaper and easier to travel 2 hours to get there, rather than the 6 hour ride it is now.
Plus I have lived in Ohio for most of my life----as a child, and then again as an adult (been back here 20 years now) and I hate it! So, Columbus is out for a number of reasons.
 
I was born -- and grew up in -- a suburb of Rochester. The people there are reasonable, tolerant, on the conservative side, friendly and intelligent. One wonderful characteristic of Rochestarians is that they always seem to be optimistic and in a good mood (well, *almost* always). There are "gay" neighborhoods... the Monroe Ave and Park Ave areas.. which strive towards a "Greenwich Village" feel.

There are bars (Google "gay bars Rochester") which seem to cover the gamuts of gay sensibilities - age, hip, dance, drag, leather, etc. And the Rochester gays are friendly, although discriminating in terms of sexual choices.

The economy, like many US cities, is sorta "mixed". The former major employers such as Xerox, Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Delco, etc. have given way to smaller technology and service companies. I think the area's biggest employer today is Wegman's Supermarkets, the country's absolute *best* supermarket chain extending into Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginiia and soon.. into Massachusetts. Wegman's has been voted one of the country's best employers. I think one out of every three Rochester workers has worked for Wegman's at one time or another. (Google "Wegmans Supermarkets")

Of course, most of the jobs are in the lower-pay range, but with careful budgeting and Rochester's relatively low housing costs, you might make it.

Winters are long and snowy, but being from Ohio, you can adapt. Summers can be heaven, although there will be 2-3 weeks of high heat and humidity to deal with. Fall is nothing short of spectacular.

The suburbs and surrounding regions have *lots* of wonderful places to see -- the Barge Canal, the Finger Lakes, Naples Valley wineries , Lake Ontario beaches... too many places to list here.

Don't overlook the Eastman Theatre and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra :-({|=

(BTW... I have not lived there in 40 yrs...having move to NYC. Yet...I have fond memories and often wonder what life would have been like had I stayed.)
 
Well-----I've VERY impulsively decided to drive up to Rochester tomorrow morning (Wed.) since I have a couple of days off work, and check out the area for myself. I am not even sure where to start (or even where I will be) once I get there! LOL. Wish me luck........;)
 
Buffalo NY is really not that bad. There are many different suburbs to live in that are beautiful (Amherst/Williamsville/Town of Tonawanda to name a few).

Says who?! lol---I would love to move to Toronto, but from what I understand, it's an expensive and difficult thing to do. First---you cannot just say "Toronto here I am!" You must get a work visa. In order to get a work visa you must be OFFERED a job in Canada. The work visa is ONLY good for THAT job. Canadian law says that businesses there can only give jobs to Americans if "it cannot find an equal substitute" in the form of a Canadian worker. Work Visa's start at $200.00. If you want to stay long term, you need some form of dual citizanship. Tests and visa's related to that can cost up to $2000.00! I have read up on this, and even have a friend who use to live here that now lives in Toronto. He was a College Student there (student visa) then got a job related to the college (work visa). If he ever loses that job he will have to leave Canada....even though he is married to a guy from there. Work visa's are not interchangable with each/any job.


So basically $$$$ is what is stopping me from living there. Maybe someday though. :)
 
Here are a few obscure facts about Rochester, NY; it was the smallest city in the US to have an extensive street car line (30 years of service ending in 1956). The easternmost Frank Lloyd Wright designed house is located on the city's East Avenue. The world's largest collection of lilacs (over 500 varieties on 22 acres) is in Highland Park.

JOHN B: I hope that you will visit Rochester, NY just for the experience of being in a new environment. It's fun to visit any place for the first time.
 
I DID visit Rochester the other day. It ended up only being a day trip because I did not have enough $$ for a hotel. I must have been living under a rock, because I expected to find a decent hotel room (Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn....) for maybe 60 or 70 bucks. Not $100.00! So, I left Cleveland at 8 in the morning, and got back to Cleveland at 9:30 at nite. It took about 4 and a half hours to get there, and the same coming back. The inbetween time was spent wandering the city and taking pics with my phonecam. I know there is much more to see, and hope to go back before Winter hits. Next, I want to explore the suburbs as well as the parts of the city I missed. Being in a new area, I had no idea where to start.....just roamed for a few hours. I can't wait to go back.
Any info on the "gay areas" or the Malls, restaurants, etc... would be appreciated. :)
 
There are several malls in Rochester Marketplace in Henrietta, Greece Ridge in Greece, Eastview in Victor, and Panorama plaza I think thats in Webster. My personal favorite is Eastview.
Ra-cha-cha has loads of restuarants chain, fine or diner there is one always near. A few well loved privately owned ones are Dinosaur BBQ and Nick Tahou Hots, it is the home of the garbage plate which is something everyone should try.
Crotchfester also has great festivals, nearly every weekend there is something to do from spring to fall.
I always found Rochester to be very gay friendly from the time I first visited 15 years ago to now.

I know you said you weren't looking at Buffalo but I will tell you most of my friends in Rochester all want to move here. Buffalos economy is pretty crappy but Rochester isn't doing any better. The entire Western NY area is pretty much the same.

You shoulda stayed at the Microtel Inn in Henrietta..Only $59!!
 
LOL--thanks, but I have no idea where Henrietta even is! I will probably try to save enough $$ to stay at a hotel in downtown Rochester next time....even thought it is a bit expensive. That way, where ever I go to explore, I won't be able to get too lost and not find my way back to the hotel.

While there, I heard that though Rochester itself is slipping, that a suburb----Greece----is quite nice. Can anyone tell me much about THAT area?

John, Henrietta is on the south-west side of the city, still very close to downtown and the thruways


Look at google maps and familiarize yourself with the city... it's not that complicated... 90% of the places to go are basically off the thruway and a couple of turns ;)

at least is way easier to learn than PR, or CT

(the other two places where I drive often)
 
John, I have relatives that live in Webster and love that. Check that out as its the "Greece of the East" :) And Henrietta is on the southwest quadrant of ROC - you probably drove right by it. The Microtel is right off the exit...www.microtelinn.com
