Outing him is what he'll be fearing most out of his mistake, so anything you do in (1.) above will make him even more upset. His embarassment will prolly lead to a strained relationship.

I'd play it cool if I were in your shoes. And the next time you meet up, see if he can meet your gaze, coz that'll be the biggest tell tale sign.

Speak to him privately and let him know you're ok, and not freaked out. If he really is gay/bisexual or whatever the label is, just be a friend.

What? What's your point? I originally stated how Rain could handle the situation, based on the information that I was given. The guy made a mistake and did not want to address the situation immediately. That does not mean that he should push the subject, if his friend is not ready to address it.

Um, go back and read the story again. They know each other personally, or outside of the internet. Anyway, Rain, I definitely would continue behaving as you are currently. He obviously did not make a mistake, and even if it were meant for someone else, it was not a joke. Hopefully, you'll contact him at some point.
