I filed for bankruptcy last month, and today I went in with my attorney to attend the hearing. I'm now officially bankrupt.

I was a minor nervous nut going to the courthouse, but luckily I got to hear about 40 minutes of dialogue from other bankruptcy clients before my case was presented. It actually calmed me down, to hear other people's stories and reasons of why someone might go bankrupt.

My attorney was so awesome, and gave me the details as far as to compose and handle myself since general questions would come from the trustee. In the end all of my debts are now gone, and I'm justing for the final ok from the clerk.

It feels great to be debt free, get a second chance at starting over, and knowing all the money I'm making will be mine. I have learned to live on cash, establish a steady work history, and I only have the future ahead of me.

All apologies and congratulations, Mr. StationToStation. In my family growing up, the value of money was ingrained into our heads from childhood. Not to be "anti-American," but we were taught to pinch pennies hard enough to make poor Abe Lincoln wince and/or make copper wire fighting over a penny ;) ... lol not that bad, but it's long been said that "The American Way" is to live beyond your means ... my siblings and I were programmed not to.

You, of course, have my best wishes and trust and confidence in your recently required wisdom to live well, I mean, "live long and prosper" now ... and please know that BearDaddy's words are true.

Aww, you should've bought a vowel. ;)

Good luck on Phase Two of your financial life.

I completely understand what you're going through. Good luck.

Best of luck moving foward

I had NO idea you were going thru this, babe. (*8*)

It's both good and bad news and scary as all fuck.

I hope you have some moral support around you....

Good moral support around me thanks for the concern. The relief of being debt free despite a court hearing is better than the stress if major debt.

Thank goodness for second chances. This humbles me some. . .

Oh no! Bobbi, I hope you're doing okay, stresswise and all. (*8*)

That's good news for you StoS and I'm happy for you, but there is another side to this. In fact there are two.

Firstly, spare a thought for the people who sold you goods and services in good faith and will not now be paid. It's hard perhaps to feel sympathy for large corporations, but what about the small trader for whom someone defaulting on a debt can be a major blow.

Secondly, your own creditworthiness is shot. Bank loans, credit cards and mortgages will all be so much more difficult to obtain in future and, if ever offered, will be on onerous terms.

You'll have been going through a hard time though and I'm glad that's over. (*8*)

Lieber ein Ende mit Schmerzen als Schmerzen ohne Ende - German proverb: sort of means that it's better to deal with the pain of ending a bad situation than to have it festering on and on.

So good for you. Now you can get on with your life.

I'm sorry that you've been through this, but you're done with it now. It's very tough out there and many people are going through the same thing, that you are.

BK gives you a fresh start. You've apparently done a chapter 7, which is pretty darned hard to get anymore. Yes, you'll have a difficult time getting needed credit for a time. Small price to pay, though.

Sounds like you filed a Chapter 7. I wish you the best as you restart your financial future.

I'm with you. I don't tell many people but I filed a little over a year ago. It took me a while to pay off my attorney to get things started. It truly was a awful confusing time with so much to get done and show the court. But this last year has been so headache free. Thank God my father helped me out with buying my house and car and paying the lawyer. I was almost homeless. I work in the health field and lost one job and got a 15% paycut with the other! State funding is almost gone. I work with the handicapped and have been doing so for 15 years. Now there is no money in it and there wasn't much money in it to begin with. People say do what you love and I love working with the handicapped. But now state cuts are making that impossible and the agencies are just hiring bodies pretty much at this point. These people don't care about the care of the handicapped. It's all very sad. So as bad as bankruptcy it could always be much worse.

Best lesson I ever learned was from someone who told me this:

Everybody who has ever gone bankrupt was approved by the bank.

It hit home for me how clear it is that I have to be my own financial trustee...that I have to say "no" sometimes...It's a good thing.

Anyway congrats on getting a fresh start, StS.

Good luck, station.

Life is full of bumps.

This, too, will pass.
