The ignorant, inconsiderate bitch who lives upstairs with her daughter, came stomping in with a hoard of after-bar friends and woke me up at 2:53 AM last night and kept me awake until almost 4 with their clomping and shouting and slamming doors. This has happened several times before.

I've complained about their music and noise. My roommate has complained to them as well, and the landlord, too.

They're up there now, sound asleep. Passed out from the booze, no doubt.

I have a great urge to go out into the hall and start slamming doors and cranking my stereo up full tilt.

The bitch is lucky I'm not a vengeful person.

Maybe I'll just leave a nasty letter in her letter box instead and send a copy to the landlord. (Just to cover my own ass, you know.)

I don't know where she parks her car, if she even has one. She's on welfare.

Well in that case, phone the welfare office and tell them that you saw her selling T-Shirts on the market and getting paid cash-in-hand.

That'll stop her silly late night antics for a good few months.

Been there, done that.

When I lived in my apartment, I had people directly behind me that were so noisy it drove me up the wall. These people couldn't walk up a flight of stairs like a normal person, they sounded like a herd of elephants all day and night. They'd bang around, slam doors, and on weekends especially, they'd have their little parties and crank the music so loud that pictures on my walls would rattle around. They got complaints from several of the neighbors, but nothing was ever done about it. They were still living there when I moved out.

My dumb ass put a hole in my wall once. A friend was over and we were beating on the wall to get them to turn the frickin music down. I eventually got so pissed off that I kicked the wall, putting my foot right through it. Yeah, that was real smart. My stupid ass had to go buy filler and plaster and all that stuff to fix the hole before I moved out or they'd charge me for it.

I wish I could be more vengeful, too. Instead of kicking the wall I would have much rather kicked them in the face.

Are you a renter? What did your landlord say to you? What does it say in your lease about after hour noises and disturbances? Check it. Call the police and demand a police report be created. Have her name and info. ready. Let the police hear the disturbance and make sure the details are requested to be listed in the police report. Make sure you get the police report number on the spot before the police leave. Create a paper trail. It's a damned shame !!!!!

Generally, today's people are very inconsiderate (the "me" world) and the problem is on the rise.

I don't endorse retaliation...however, do you have a smoke alarm that would "accidentally" go off when she's sleeping after a "disturbing" night? Or, during the actual occurence? There are actual laws about loud noises that hold up in court. Smoke alarms are not one of those laws.

I am sorry to hear of your troubles. It is a shame that people are not conciderate of their neighbors! If this has happened before, and you've told the landlord, and nothing has been done, then I agree with naked boy, it time to start a paper trail with the police. Good luck to you!

Don't make noise now while she's all passed out, honey, it's a waste of energy... wait until she wakes up with a hangover, then make lots of noise. For best results, go visit her upstairs neighbor wearing tap shoes and offer to buff the floors for her. If she lives on the top floor, you could consider doing a little roofing work. You know, just for fun.

Don't think of it as revenge, think of it as tough love: you're teaching her a much-needed lesson in acoustics and good-neighborship.

Unfortunately, on weekends, the police are very busy and it takes hours for them to respond to 'noise complaints'. There would be no noise by the time they arrived. I'm a renter, but have no lease. It is a 'quiet building', though, and the lady has been warned several times by the landlord. The next step is eviction. (She just moved in 3 months ago.)

Just call me a depraved party person, but it was Saturday night, surely she's entitled to some fun in the weekend? I know I am.[-X

I understand that it's the weekend, but this noise can and does occur during any night of the week. I've lost count of the times they've awakened me in the early hours of the morning. They quiet down when I yell at them, but they soon forget about it and do it all over again.

I should not have to live my life according to her schedule.

I study architecture and I know how the noise level can be reduced, unfortunately it only works when she does it. What is the house like? is the room she occupies on top of yours?

It's an old building (built in the late 1800s). It's also a 'protected' building, which means that all renovations must be approved by city council, and it's not financially feasible for the landlord to soundproof the fourplex.

I live on the bottom floor in one half of the building. The woman lives directly over me. I've lived in apartments most of my life. I know people make noise. But this is a woman who does laundry at 1 AM. Her boyfriend wears work boots around the apartment. Her teenaged daughter has friends running in and out, up and down the stairs at all hours, day or night.

I don't have a lease. I've known my landlord for over thirty years. I don't need one. But she has a lease and there is a 'noise' clause in it. Unfortunately, the landlord has to follow the eviction laws just like anybody else.

Poke holes in her condoms!

I'm sorry. That was uncalled for. I do not advocate the terrible practice of condom puncturing.

Um...I dunno...hit the ceiling with a broom or something.

£300 an hour and the problem is solved my good freind.

One time a mate of ours got ripped off 2K for a shit car - two days later it was parked in his parents living room.

That's all I'll say ..|

Is there carpeting over the stairways? That helps reduce the noise a little bit too.

Even shaggy carpet wouldn't silence these elephants. (Yes, there's carpeting on the stairs.) The woman and her friends are just plain insensitive to other people. She simply doesn't care.

Neil, your neighbour problems sound remarkably similar to my own troubles with the guy who lives above me; loud music at anti-social hours, stomping about as though he's wearing hob-nail boots, etc.

My neighbour tends to go through phases; he makes far more racket when he's pissed (in the English sense of the word) and I can tell when he's totally off his face because I can hear him banging and crashing around and falling over. There is only a thin layer of concrete between us - his floor; my ceiling - and most of the noise problems would be solved if he simply carpeted his floor. But I doubt that's ever likely to happen though; he's lived here for about 7 years; 4 more years than me.

He's seems to be on a cycle; the noise gets louder over a period of about a month, then, when I can't stand it any longer, I slip a (polite) note through his door and he goes quiet for a while. Then the cycle begins all over again.

I live in a Local Authority Housing block, and he is well aware that if I made an official complaint his tenancy would be under threat. So far I haven't done that; I (perhaps naively) hope that eventually he will get the message that his behaviour is, at times, incredibly anti-social and begin to moderate the noise levels from his flat. But, as his flat is on the top floor, and he has no one stomping about above him, and blaring loud music down into his flat I think he believes that I am complaining about nothing.

I'm not a particularly vindictive person, but a few times I have been moments away from knocking on his door and simply punching his lights out when he answered. But I realise that being arrested by the police for assault would not really solve the problem. I'm just hoping that, sooner or later, he moves out and someone with a more social conscience moves in.

I know that none of this rambling tale helps your situation in anyway, but I selfishly felt the need to use your thread in order to vent my spleen.

At least I know I'm not alone in this and that other people can genuinely sympathize with my situation.

He said she's on welfare. They don't use condoms. More kids=more $$$

I had a neighbour once that would get angry when I listened to Frank Sinatra whilst showing in the afternoon on the weekends. The bastard was a pilot and somehow entitled to more silence then the rest of us.

Yet, every Tuesday night at 1:30AM he'd be fucking someone against the wall. And I'd go over and pound on his door.

When he stopped answering the door, I would just call the police and tell them "I think a woman is getting beat."

^^ Just like everything else, I guess we're a bit behind here in the states!

I believe it started with Mother's Allowance. Once that changed to make it more difficult, welfare changed soon afterward. Now, young people think twice about having more kids. The money doesn't increase the way it did.
