Sadly, in some parts of the continent, this is exactly true.

One can only despair at the shocking disregard for human life in these places.

I maintain my belief, however, that it is a chronic lack of education, and not race, that is the prime cause.

The solution to these countries' problems will be found with schools, not guns.

I was once told by a family member - just days before I came out - that any member of our family who was "one of them" would be given a bullet because it's all they deserved. I'm glad to see it's not just my relatives who are ignorant.

I never did get that bullet. And I'd put money on it that his son would never face the hangmans noose either. He's all talk. Dangerous, inflamatory talk, but talk none the less.

I've got to admit to being a little disturbed by the lack of international political pressure that has been placed on Uganda during the promotion of this proposed legislative change.

Almost makes me wonder if other countries are going to sit back and watch and see what happens.

In related news, the Swedish government is reportedly considering cutting aid to Uganda over what one government official described as the "appalling" Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

Gunilla Carlsson, Sweden’s development assistance minister, has indicated:

“My number two at the ministry, who has direct contact with the Ugandan government, has brought it up... We’ve talked about it in Uganda, and I’ve also tried to speak to the kind of organisations in Uganda that are the target of the legislation.”
Approximately $50 million in development aid is given by Sweden to Uganda every year.

Sweden is threatening action if this law passes. This was the only one I knew off the top of my head.
Will it stop this law from being passed? I Don't know. I hope it does stop them.

the alarming rate of aids infection in africa has given many radical christian groups a convenient cloak under which to hide in africa. it's up for debate just how much they geniunely care about aids prevention or treatment and what their real agenda actually is.

uganda has an interesting recent history on this topic and its important to know about that to understand these anti-gay crusades. people are frightened and politicans there (supported by American conservatives and some religious leaders...probably the highest profile connection being the controversial rick warren - who attempted to distance himself when things got too heated) are using that fear to advance personal, violently homophobic agendas.

when you start doing some research and reading it is both fascinating and terrifying at the same time...

China has put a lot of effort in spending money there to build their infrastructure and other stuff. I doubt trying to change the political climate on homosexuality is high on its list of priorities when dealing with them. China is investing in those countries because it seeks sources of raw materials for its industries, and the money it pumps in enables it also to affect UN decisions when it comes to things it wants.

Colony, no. In its pockets, perhaps.
