  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Attention I would prefer the option of leaving someone a comment or emoticon.

I miss being able to leave brief personal comments directly to a post.
That was always my preferred method of interaction here .... until the option was removed.
Hoody said it better. (y)

Computers continue to "train" people in behaviors.

At work, we bought shitty version of Oracle years before I worked there. Now the company is too cheap to pay to program the necessary fixes.

JUB bought the new software. Now we're not likely to get a customization.

Some of our most popular members were defined by their comments, folks like RobertAC or several other incarnations of similar darlings.

I don't understand how it's become less personal.
You can quote someone's post (or the relevant part thereof) and then leave your comment/reply/opinion or whatever.

The emoticons are useful when you want show appreciation (or disdain if you use the angry smiley face) and that should stop forum members from quoting entire posts (sometimes with lots of images) just to say "I like this!". (of course you like this because the images posted are meant to be enjoyed. No need to state the obvious).

^ It's a matter of mechanics.

When you could leave a private comment, linked to a post, you could have a sidebar conversation that was quick, direct, and clear. You didn't have to leave the page and go send a PM. Reading JUB was a bit like reading a page and having a friends alongside you to share jokes, responses, and real-time comments.

Losing that ability makes the conversation laborious, and the limited emoticons don't replace that or make it clear. An angry emoticon doesn't mean you are angry at the poster, but it may, and a laughing emoticon may mean you find the post funny, or that you're intetentionally being sarcastic in response.

How we responded privately is how we built a personality here online. It's diminished now.

You mean the old forum allowed you to post a private comment that wasn't a private message?
I don't even understand what that is, and besides, why all the secrecy?

No, private doesn't rise to the arena of secret. We have private conversations at home, at work and elsewhere that are not secret.

When someone posts something and we want to make a quip, an attaboy, an amen, a questton, or a running comment, the comment utility allowed that. It might offend others, it might be misunderstood, or most likely, was only between you and the other guy.

You might make a catty comment, but not intended to hurt anyone else, or start a feud. You might make a compliment, but not want to get attention that others would comment on. All kinds of reasons exist for private chat.

It worked by there being an icon for comments. You selected it and it left your comment attached to the posting where it was made, but only accessible by you and the recipient and the mods.

You could only leave one comment per post, so it wasn't really a "conversation" that could extend beyond that first remark.

You didn't have to leave the page and go send a PM.

Hover your cursor over any member screen name and a button will appear enabling you to send a quick direct message (right click to open a new window). Your message will not be linked to a post, so you'll also need to explain to why you are starting a sidebar conversation. Unlike the Post Comment system in the prior forum software, the recipient will then be able to send a response directly back to you - without leaving the page on which the message arrived. That was not possible in the prior system.

I was just thinking that maybe we could add something like a star rating system just for Vannie to use. I know that receiving a coveted 5 Stuffed Cabbages on one of my posts would truly be an honor--and incentive to post only my best.

I see that's all it says is what you said; 'send direct message'.

That takes one into private messaging, right?

I don't need anything else to go looking for to disable it.

The term 'private message' implies two-faced and cowardly. I have no time, or use for that sort of shit

A conversation can and did run over a series of comments, often in the same thread. If you didn't do that, I guess you couldn't have a conversatiton that way, but many of us did.

It may also matter is your sense of humor is creative rather than merely repetitive. For many on JUB, I never ever see them post a humorous comment other than repeating some joke or meme, unless you count sarcastic attacks.

The comments were often a source of comic commentary, and the forum is more austere without them.
