BTW, the 'DOD wipe' is a 5-times with pseudo-random data, not just ones and zeros. I've used a program called 'Blackboard File Wipe' (they also make a 'drive wipe') that's as quick as anything I normally need.

My favorite data eraser is a Colt .45, but I'm known for being excessively violent. :D One pass is generally sufficient with the Colt data eraser.

Don't nag. It physically erase everything to some level but I don't believe the recyclers have too much time on their hands for spying your erased documents.

Another solution is to do a low-level format but it requires the manufacturer's utility and then it can take up to hours before the format process is completed.

Low-level formatting recreates the disk layout i.e sectors...
