If Gov Shutdown, Dems want Pres and Congress paychecks cut off

Under current law, the president, who earns $400,000 annually, and members of Congress, who draw $174,000, will still receive a paycheck during a budget impasse because their salaries are paid with mandatory, not appropriated, spending.

Not that the law couldn't change.

Last week, the Senate unanimously passed a bill sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) stipulating that the president and members of Congress would not be paid if the government shuts down over a spending impasse or if the country exceeds its debt limit, which budget experts say would happen later this year if Congress does not vote to raise the national debt ceiling.

"They shouldn't get their pay and they shouldn't get retroactive pay because this is a very basic responsibility that we have to keep the government running," Boxer said Monday of lawmakers taking home salaries during a shutdown.

So now its passed and its waiting for Old Boner to take it up in the house of reps.

I'll bet he will not saying its a Job killing bill....HA!!

we all need to get behind this. If these assholes cant compromise NONE of them should recieve a paycheck.

I think if they are cutting off the rest of the non emergency civil servants, they need to learn their place.

These guys are our employees. Its time they stopped acting like they are the overlords.

Republicans should, theoretically -- it makes more sense to cut the pay of people who can't get their jobs done than to cut funding for programs which provide jobs for those on the bottom.

the senate passed it and the president will sign it. Boner just needs to put it up for a vote.

But that's very doubtful. I think old boner needs his cocktail hour money too much to give it up.

They are over compensated for their "jobs" as it is. In any other forum, when one does not perform their basic job functions, they get terminated. Taking the pay of congress is the least we can do....I would also be all for cutting their government/congressional pensions all together, and placing them on government medicaid, etc etc etc.

Since they're all engaged in borrowing 40 cents of every dollar the feds are spending, they should have 40 cents taken out of every dollar of pay and benefit.
