WORLDS APART.
Probably none of y'all remember this show. It ran on The Discovery Channel in 2002 or 2003, I think. I managed to catch it when I had a satellite receiver on which I could get the Canadian Discovery Channel, who re-ran the series in 2004 or 2005. I've continued looking for DVD's of this show, which I WOULD SO BUY.
The premise of the hours-long show is that the show would choose a family from the USA (with one to three children), and fly them to another part of the world, into an off-the-grid tribal society, where they would remain for nine days, and they would need to adapt. Absolute immersive culture shock - no electricity, no cell service, etc. Sometimes even the children needed to learn how to participate in the capturing and killing of their own food.
The episode I remember most vividly was the New Jersey family being flown to a remote tribe in northwest Kenya. The parents were bored, the mother was rather queasy, and the two children HATED the place. There was nothing to do, the place stinks, killing animals for food is disgusting, etc. By the time they needed to be brought back to civilization, THE FAMILY (yes, including the children) WAS CRYING, BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE. The tribe was so accepting. An elder, who was the Chief, was SUCH a sweetheart! He was so reassuring, that the family would be all right, despite the tears and sorrow of needing to leave. He hugged everybody so tenderly.
It still makes me cry a little, just writing this. That episode was so powerful. I would so, so love to see it again!
