  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

If you have $1000.00

Whatever. Your rants have helped us get to page 2 I see. Isn't that your metric for a successful thread?

All points technically valid, sure. But largely over-intellectualised, in my not at all humble opinion.

No doubt. But intentionally so, because I wanted the post to accomplish several things. One - I need to explain it first and foremost to myself. Why DID the request piss me off? It wasn't simply "this isn't something I choose not to partake in" - it went beyond that. Secondly - I wanted it clear to JUB-at-large that this wasn't simply me jumping up and clapping my hands at an opportunity to take the OP down a peg or three. I wanted to make it clear where my bone of contention lay. And thirdly - I wanted it clear to the OP where I thought the problem was. I didn't want it dismissed as simply "haters gonna hate".

I have actually enjoyed the over the top reactions that so many of you have had over this. Whatever you all think that this thread says about me...it is like seeing all of you under one of those lighted magnifying mirrors ...and being able to see all the open pores and ugly and angry patches up close.

Like most magnifying glasses, it works in two directions. I've now had an opportunity to see another side of you that I hadn't had much opportunity of seeing before. Reading your reactions to the reactions, I'm perhaps even more surprised than I was before. Assuming the charity is a worthwhile one, I'm pleased that you have gotten several requests and offers. I'm assuming you'll muddle through without me there. :)

Hmmm.

Very sporting of you to broadcast your self-explanation to the world at large, then.

Perhaps explaining it to yourself only, then sending a PM to the OP only to cover the rest, would have been a better/more gracious/less sanctimonious/different/polite/your-choice-here way of accomplishing it*.

*I know - exactly what I might have done here myself with this reply. But, for whatever reason, serendipitously ironic or purely intentional, didn't.

.. to treat you lunch at the Oyster Bar ...we'll look forward to meeting up with you...

Relax people.

And you thought it was a good idea to start a thread for the sole purpose of eliciting the reactions of members of this forum?

What were you thinking??

^Yes what were YOU thinking! I'll settle for the Instagram version...

Oh. And yes. I thought I had posted the site for the charity before I had to run off last evening...but with the seething vitriol being ejaculated all over the thread by some of you...by the time I returned to HT this morning....why bother? maybe it is the oxycontin I'm scarfing back for my broken arm...who knows?

With you flair for the dramatic in your words it seems very unlikely that the posting of the site for the charity would have so easily slipped your mind, that just isn't you. Admit it, you were just trying to be funny with your post, whether for a real charity or not, and it flopped. I have yet to see anything to point to a real charity so I will definitely not be supporting.

Can't say that I was too bothered by the thread to begin with? The amount of money being asked for is probably what people have the biggest problem with as it seems a bit forward? But either way, you could either not donate or just ask the OP considering he has been such a long time member here, I assume that is why he posted the way he did.

I don't know about others, but this people has been known to drop more than that, per plate, for those cheesy "no dinner" charity dinners. You know the ones where they collect the money, but instead of wasting it on an actual dinner there isn't one. All the money goes for the purpose of the charity instead of for the "venue" of the dinner.

Is there an oaf that's not an egg?

Is Sausy in the house tonight?

...for one of my favourite charitable causes....and would like us to treat you lunch at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station next Friday...then let me know and we'll look forward to meeting up with you. Just have your chequebook open.
Let's put it this way... if ANYONE here, even one with a sterling reputation as yourself had posted this, you'd be among those who wouldn't let that poster off the hook... it's just so rude. It's like influence peddling albeit on a smaller scale than scandalous politicians, but just unseemly nonetheless. It could have been worded a LOT better... it doesn't cause one to want to give but to hold on for dear life to that checkbook. If you were kidding it was a joke that misfired. If not just suck up to that you set yourself up for a reaction that largely tended to the negative.

I think the kind of people that can afford to donate that kind of money should just do it, not get together and circle jerk over how great they are for being able to afford entry into the fancy donaters club.

Since I'm sensing an untapped market....

...if you send $25 to my favorite charity (Art From Ashes, a LGBTQ youth arts charity), I'll send you a personalized greeting card and a coupon good for a free Blizzard at your local Dairy Queen. There. :)

Lex

Well, it IS Halloween. Not sure if they still make the Monster Cookie Blizzard though. I think that was only in the summer.

Well, silly...none of the money was going to the 'venue' as you so quaintly describe the Oyster Bar at lunchtime. Lunch would have been my personal treat.

I'm still chuckling at the sanctimonious, pearl clutching gasps of horror from so many posters here.

And dessert would have been fabulous. But after a 4 lb lobster...who would have room?

A 4 lb hard-shell lobster - which it would be - is no draw. Marine cardboard; you'll spend the next day picking it out from between your teeth. Wouldn't touch it for the $1,000.00.

Come to Maine next summer for sweet soft-shell lobster.
