Is this work chair really comfortable for sitting on it for hours? I tested it at my local Ikea and it felt awkward. Which model is better, if at all, the swivel or the legs?

i like the swivel model better but i think you should be your own judge. you said it felt awkward when you tried it. why is that? a chair should feel good as soon as you sit on it imho.

I wouldn't want either. Get a huge comfy one. Maybe one that is heated :)

The first one looks like it would tip forward when you sit on it. And what is the flap in the back for?

Next to our furniture at the "office", that looks like a down mattress to me.

If it's not comfortable, get a different chair. You don't have to get Ikea. Especially if you're going to use it for work, you want your chair to give you the support you need for extensive use and to promote good, comfortable, back posture. If the Ikea chair feels awkward, then you probably won't feel comfortable and that will lead to ergonomic physical stress and pain.

I'm sure other places sell work chairs, like Office Max or Target, that are cheap and comfortable and better designed for office needs.

My problem is that my back is already "broken". I can't sit in front of a computer for more than 2 hours without pain. I currently have a standing desk, the back pain is mostly gone, but now my legs start to get tired really quick and I need to go back to a chair

I love cheap used ikea stuff off of craigslist, but those chairs don't look very comfortable.

Have you considered one of those cushioned anti-fatigue floor mats for your standing desk? I work on my feet for hours and those things are great.

First time I hear of these floor mats. I can't imagine them to be really helpful, as I'm already standing on a rug.

The mats are usually for commercial use, like in a lab, factory, or an industrial/restaurant kitchen. There's a ton of manufacturers/distributors online, but you might be able to find one at Costco/Sam's Club or even Staples.

How thick is your rug and padding underneath? And is it on top of plywood, hardwood, or something harder like concrete?

If you're standing all day long the right shoes are the most important things to have. Sanita clogs are supposedly the best on the market, better than Crocs or Birkenstock.

1) I'm in Europe.
2) The rug is... hmm... it's from Ikea but it's not listed on their website anymore :/
3) I'm unemployed, I'm at home in front of the 'puter all day, so I take off my shoes.

hmm, those gel inserts for shoes are worth a try for your back/legs. It's the same principle as the cushioned matts. They're not expensive and you can find them at any drug store.

Maybe you can position your computer in front of a nice comfy couch instead of a hard chair.

You know, a lot of employees in my building are up on ergonomics and some of them have those large rubber exercise balls that they switch out with their chair every so often. My guess is that it has good cushioning and forces you to be in good posture. I would look into that as an option.

Oh heh. Exercise balls and other ergonomical chairs... my back is already so bad that all these things have no effect. They all just prevent back problems, but once you already have them like I do, they're of no use.

I only bought a computer desk from IKEA, it is junk. Falling apart in one year. the wood fiber is breaking loose where all the screws are.
