My fellow Americans, we aren't the only ones affected by this problem. If anything, it's worse in Europe.

This is mostly the UK's fault, with its laughable dealings with illegal immigrants.

By the way, there are thousands upon thousands more in Malta, Greece, Spain and the Canarian Islands.

A quote from a local Greek newspaper:

Migrant smuggling

Police in Nikaia, near Piraeus, yesterday were questioning a 23-year-old Afghan and eight Pakistanis believed to have been smuggling illegal immigrants into the country from Turkey. According to police, the ring members would collect the migrants from Evia and drive them to an apartment in Nikaia where they would beat them and force them to telephone their relatives and arrange payments for their release. A group of eight would-be migrants, from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, were also detained.

Harke, did you read the part about Britain, and its social safety net?

Which part?

This is making me very worried in terms of the public health care situation here in the United States.

Normally, I eat economists for breakfast because I detest the look and smell of them, but once in a while, one of them says something actually worth listening to. In this respect, one of them said,"Illegal immigration and socialism cannot exist hand in hand."

Neither can responsible capitalism or the justice system. Note that many illegals are arguably refugees from Iraq/Afghanistan.

I'm puddled. I don't know anything about these people... why would they leave their crappy country for France? why not just come straight to the UK? And why do they want to come to the UK? How do they even get in to France?:confused::confused::confused:

They don't come to the UK for three main reasons; (a) they don't have passports, visas etc, (b) the English Channel is a natural barrier which limits illegal entry and (c) they're not fucking welcome.

^ Okay but why go to France? All the countries they are coming from are nowhere near France, why not go to somewhere closer?

I heard there are a lot of Polish people in England but I can't find any of them.

Poles can come to the UK because they're in the EC too. If you can't find any in Leeds, try going to Hull or Selby.

Afghanis or whatever can't come here because they don't belong to the EC. They often get as far as France because of open borders and so on and because it's as near to the UK as you can get in continental Europe, but the channel is a physical barrier which stops them getting to the UK.

Oh! I thought they swam here or something. On CSI: Miami these people float to Miami on doors and planks of wood. It is rather impressive.

Sky News seems to think they park in Calais while trying to get to relatives and friends in the UK. I guess if you don't have a visa or probably even a passport, you can't just grab a flight straight to Heathrow. Not to mention the cost of the ticket.

Sad, but probably necessary.

^Well, they interviewed one guy who was in the camp; that was his story and he claimed to not be alone in it...
