Six illegal immigrants arrested at Qualcomm

San Diego:

Six undocumented Mexican immigrants were arrested today by U.S. Border Patrol agents at Qualcomm Stadium, after a report that they were stealing food and water meant for evacuees, according to spokesman Damon Foreman.

San Diego police responded to a call about alleged theft from the evacuation center and encountered six people in a van who didn't speak English and didn't have California driver's licenses, Foreman said. The police officers called the Border Patrol, who arrived at the stadium and made the arrests, he said. Foreman said the immigrants admitted they were Mexican citizens and that they were stealing.

Border Patrol agents are not looking for illegal immigrants at the center but will continue responding to police calls for assistance.

"We are not in any means at Qualcomm for enforcement capacity," he said. "We are not there to take advantage of a situation."

Foreman said the agents have been helping in the evacuation and rescue effort in addition to carrying out their main duties.

"We are dedicated to our primary mission to securing our borders," he said.

If they were white christian right-wing Limbaugh listeners would you feel the same way? ;)

Border Patrol dont put out fires that often do they? They are doing their job.

What would you rather do with those thieves, give them a pass?

btw--- You know how PC the SDPD are... so these guys must have really been fucking up.

The immigrants were likely in genuine need of the foodstuffs for themselves or other illegals, but were afraid to seek aid at Qualcomm openly due to the fear of being captured. And they were anyway.

I am sure the evacuees are being well-cared for around the county. Have you seen the numbers on aid coming into So Cal? Check out the NYTimes. Not anything like Katrina at all.

Note- I bought dinner at a Pat&Oscars a few blocks from the stadium last night. You should have seen the pizzas going out the door. Malls with food establishments all over the place (likely donating to Qualcomm). No one is going to starve.

I have heard no reports of looting in the affected areas. It seems that would be the opportunity for any real criminal element. Empty multi-million dollar homes.

Is this your first San Diego fire, SantaCBear? Were you not here in 2003? Those fires seemed a lot worse to me. No one was prepared. "Dick" Murphy had sent everything to San Bernardino. The city was caught with its pants down.

^ "crawled and climbed"

They must have been crawling and climbing INSIDE OF THEIR VAN :rotflmao:

Read the Article for gawd sake

I assume the food and water was meant for victims of the fires.
The illegals came here voluntarily (even thugh they might have had good reasons), they are not the "victims" generous donators had in mind.
There are low life people on both sides of the border who take advantage of things like this.

I meant how they got into the U.S., silly.

How do you 'know' they had to "crawl" and "climb" to get here illegally? All I know is what LA Times wrote about them. No mention of them crawling and climbing. They did have a Van tho.... Probably drove across.

Earth to SantaCBear:

There are many undocumented migrant workers living in makeshift "homes" typically constructed of cardboard boxes, in the canyons in the fire areas. Those people are "evacuees" just as much as property owners in the area are.

If that were true concerning these guys then why were they arrested? (Hint: Read Article)

Seems to me that a thief is a thief is a thief! They should be prosecuted for the act of theft and their immigration status sorted out in the process. If they're here illegally then that should be dealt with separately and not made into a red-herring for a completely different reason or political agenda.

Arresting poor people -just because they're "illegals"- who "steal" food and water that's being offered free during a natural disaster.

My God. What have Americans become?

It really is a "San Diego" issue. We are a bordertown, dependent on the country to the south of us for cheap labor. If you live in one, you would understand bw92116's position.

It would be my guess that SantaCBear has not had much personal experience with the migrant/illegal population here in the city. Either as acquaintances/workers or having worked himself in some kind of outreach progam (church, humanitarian,...). If he did, he might respond in a completely different manner.

It is still a sad story all around. Also, please check out the NYTimes comparisons of Katrina to the fires in San Diego. It is an eye-opener. There is a lot to be done. Bw92116's comment regarding the SUVs was kind of offhanded, but based in truth.

Well ICO7, I'm a law & order kind of guy but when it comes to a few poor people helping themselves to food and water offered for free to evacuees during a natural disaster, I think arresting them is just plain crummy.

I knew it was more to it than they were 'hungry' and stealing to eat. How did I know... SDPD is too PC (see post #5)

Oh, so that is how we are to understand the exploitation of foreigners and to hell with the law and the overall economy. Minimum wage laws are passed just so they can be subverted with "cheap" labor from another land to bypass laws. You just have to 'be' there.

It sounds like you have a lot of pain in your heart that you must endure, IC07.

But like I wrote...it is a "San Diego" issue. The city is cut off by Camp Pendleton to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the west and the mountains/desert to the east. There is only Mexico to the south. People cross the border in both directions daily. Work in US, live in Mexico. And vice versa. The ties are very deep and complicated.

Kudos to you, bw92116! You have a great compassion. Your heart is definitely in the right place.
