  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I'm confused about the new Karate Kid movie

BLASPHEMER! HERETIC!!!

Cast this man OUT!!! :mad::mad::mad:

(I happen to think that Will Smith does have some VERY bright spots in his acting, but if someone was to say he's waning, i'd most certainly agree)

Oh, and i won't be heading out to see this. No one can fill Morita's shoes, especially not pedobear mustache Chan, whose movies i've avoided since... i think Rush Hour 3, or Forbidden Kingdom(which bored me to tears).

You Sir, need a spanking! :spank: (*8*)

The only thing I don't agree with is the comparison of Stephanie Meyer to Madonna or the like. Sure she isn't considered as one of the great writers, but when I read her books, I thought they were brilliant.

That philosophy is why crap keeps getting churned out, and why I don't forsee it stopping anytime soon. Too few hold the entertainment industry to a standard. People keep going to see recycled garbage because it's just something to fill a couple of hours. It doesn't matter if it's bad, as long as you're distracted.

^ This. The literary world is pretty much in agreement with Meyer being a shitty writer. Just look up opinions on her. I too would enjoy her books if I settled for mediocrity; fortunately - since I have taste - I don't.

Your entitled to your opinion but I really couldn't care less what the literary world thinks, I enjoy the books. I know that they aren't the greatest works of fiction ever and I don't take them seriously but that doesn't stop me from liking the story and the Twilight universe.

Oh and just because you believe the books to be mediocre, doesn't meant that those who enjoy them don't have taste. I'd rather enjoy my, "shitty books" than go with the masses.

Its pretty funny how some consider these books to be awful, yet despite the literary worlds opinions there are plenty of people of all ages who disagree.

FYI, I have plenty of taste - approx. 10,000 tastebuds to prove it!

Don't get me wrong, if a movie plain sucks then I won't buy it on release or even consider paying to see a sequel, but I also don't hold it against anyone that the movie I payed money for was crap. It's my choice to go and see movies, buy books etc and if you come across a real bad one, you know to stay away from them in the future.

It isn't about being distracted for a few hours (whats wrong with that anyway?) its about going to see a movie that you can then have an informed opinion on. I won't base my opinions on what someone else says about a movie, I want to form my own opinions before passing judgement.

I don't like remakes, but in some, rare cases they can enhance the original. Personally, watching old movies that are showing their age can sometimes be just as bad as watching a crappy remake. It's all down to the personal view of the individual watching the movie.

You, too, are entitled to your opinion, and so am I.

I've never heard of Stephanie Meyer until now, and I, too, am one not to go with 'the masses'. So, I shall admit that, despite the risk of severe retribution, I think Stephen King is a horrible writer. His stories might be good but he can't write them worth a damn.

Very well stated....I enjoy reading your comments....with the exception of Nomenclature, you and I seem to be about the only ones with common sense (and in touch with reality) in here ..|

Exactly, just because a large number of people think that Stephen King is an amazing writer, it is well within your rights to dislike him. Agreeing with something to fit in with the masses isn't something I'm prepared to do.

If, in someone elses opinion, you have "shitty taste" based on what YOU like then, in my opinion it really says something about that other person rather than you.

Thanks for the comment, sometimes I find myself climbing the walls reading comments on these boards. For a community that has suffered enough discrimination etc based on differences as individuals, some people in here really do not respect the opinions of others (or they can't have a discussion as reasonable adults)

It isn't that I dislike him. I can't read his stories because of the way he writes them. He tries too hard to tell me how to read them.

I haven't read many of his books myself but I know what you mean, to me it's as if he's guiding you through the story, almost like he is telling you what you should feel or think whilst reading it.

I'm specifically addressing remakes when I say "crap", since that's what this thread is about.

If people want to just go see anything, because it's what people are talking about and they want to be in on the conversation, that's one thing (lame as that might be). But, when they pay for it in the theater, they are voting with their wallet. When they "approve" of every shit remake Hollywood puts out, that encourages them to make more.

That's the problem I have with it, because I'm sick of movies suffering because of the "profit over artistry" attitude. How many thousands of great stories are out there, never reaching the big screen, because Hollywood wants to take the safe, profitable, SHITTY route of remaking and ruining every movie from the 80s? It seems that films have been taken over by investors, instead of great storytellers. Whatever makes these pricks the most money with the least amount of risk.

I don't have a problem with Twilight, because at least that's an original story. Come talk to me in 20 years if one of the studios trots out a remake of it, complete with some stupid spin to "update" it.

Unfortunately the studio's know that they can remake movies with minimal effort and maximum returns so I don't think the remake business is gonna die anytime soon. I think it was earlier in this thread that someone mentioned they were currently working on a bigger budget remake of a movie that was made here in the UK only 3 or 4 years ago, and even then that was a remake.

Hollywood is a business and like any business they don't really care about the quality, only their profits!

Where exactly is the prejudice, or the stupidity or the injustice or the immaturity, but mostly the prejudice?

Since you needed an explanation:
A prejudice is a prejudgment: i.e. a preconceived belief, opinion, or judgment made without ascertaining the facts
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prejudice

2 a(2): an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge
2 c: an irrational attitude of hostility directed against an individual
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/prejudice

1 a: An adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.

He's just a kid...and people are already attacking his personal character, instead of his acting????? This thread is about the movie itself, not the cast. Besides, let his acting and his accomplishments speak for themselves...the above comment about Jaden not putting in any work was just plain ludicrous. The kid has been in 3 movies, 2 TV sitcoms, and 2 music videos. In addition, he has won SEVEN awards, 5 of them before the age of 10. I think that is a great accomplishment for an 11 year old. Plus he trained hard for Karate Kid. He actually was forced to REALLY learn martial arts for the role (no special effects or stunt doubles)...what other 11 year old kid do you know who has enough discipline to prepare for his character so professionally, obediently, and rigorously like adults do?? Name one!!

It's ok if you don't like his acting, you're entitled to your opinion. But at least consider the facts and don't pre-judge the kid before he even enters adult hood. Don't attack his personal character and his personal life (ok, so just because you don't like his dad--you automatically don't like him??? Some of you don't like him just because....you have no f***ing clue why, but you just don't), which has nothing to do with his talent. Jeez, at least give him a chance to hang his own self, if that's what you're so hoping for---don't commit homicide for him..... ](*,) ](*,)

now offtopic:

We should all just do some kung fu fighting right in this thread! :jab: What did Jackie say? Oh yeah..."Jack it off!" *|*

On another topic, I seen the concept video of a new Mortal Kombat movie which actually looks half decent.

Anything with Jeri Ryan and I'm a fan anyway!

Wow, really? I haven't heard of that-----I was a fan of the original MK movies and the video games....do you recall the url where you saw that at? I hope it isn't butchered like they did the new Street Fighter: Chun Li movie

Yeah although it is a kinda reboot and is more along the "realism" aspect i.e. it isn't all mythical etc.

I think it could work very well and from what I've seen it's got enough in it to hold my interest at least. :D

The thing the creators of this remake forgot is that for the movie to work you have to sympathize with the kid, not be so irritated that you want to slap the shit out of him yourself.

There's going to be an earthquake today or something just as monumental....I totally agree with you, JonesHere! This remake appears to lack any karisma. This kid needs a whooping. ..|
