Some days ago I started a thread to tell you I got a new job as a "webmaster" after being unemployed for about two years.

I was already doubtful if it was the right choice when I started. Now I definitely know I'm going to quit there:

All employees were invited to an x-mas dinner at a restaurant yesterday evening/night. Yes, x-mas. They didn't have such a dinner in December so they made up for it yesterday.

As I stated in the other thread, together with me we're 5 people and 2 from a "sister company" (or whatever you call it in English) one floor above us. All my co-workers smoke, I don't (smoked three boxes of cigarettes in my life though). The boss and one co-worker are also heavy drinkers. Every quitting time they drink their beer and next morning you can see the empty bottles piling up.

I don't think they have a drinking problem though, they're just able to drink that much and still can work. Now obviously yesterday evening it was more of a scenery you see in a pub than at an x-mas dinner with co-workers (no females except the waitress).

The co-worker I'm replacing was also present. He's been working from home for that company ever since and is introducing me into the work I'll have to take over, before he leaves for his new job in one month.

After hearing rumours, it turns out he's gay, (cute,) heavy drinker too, probably early stage of HIV+ and surprise, along with the (straight) heavy drinking co-worker he's coking (c-o-c-a-i-n-e). He also got -5 sympathy points from me when the co-worker showed him his new iPod and he hinted at taking a line on the display, I giggled because it seemed a bit funny, when he snubbed at me "You don't need to laugh", like he seemed the tough guy who's seen everything because he's doing drugs.

Now I'm a moderate/social drinker and don't take any other drugs, yet my bubble burst a long time ago and I know there are people like that out there in this world, but it's just a bit too much having to cope with such guys on a daily basis, even if they can behave at work. The guys aren't mean to me, they even seem to notice that I'm rather shocked, but they're completely different from my character.

Plus I'm overstrained with the responsability of my job that I'll have to take over, which I didn't realize during the interview and when starting there. I thought I'm just an employee creating websites, but I'm going to be fully responsible for that "department", which consists of me, one guy.

Dunno if the above construction of words is understandable, I'm a bit pissed.

That is not an environment that I would put up with either. I'm sorry to hear that it did not work out for you. Have you thought about other possible career opportunities or training that interest you?

Sorry but how about dealing with it until you find another job?
They're co-workers not friends. Just go in, do your job and leave.
You'll find it much easier to find a job when you have one guy.

Good luck

No muney, no edukashun.

I get all kinds of funny reactions to that, like stress, depression, frustration, social phobia, anxiety, sweaty hands, twitches.

It's not my first work place, I know that "just doing the job and leaving" doesn't work. You get involved to more than that at a work place.

:-({|=

I wouldn't put up with that.

You'll find something eventually.

Best of luck!

It might be better to try and find something before you quit...... if you just can't find anything then at least you've made a little $

I liked this advice, and I think stress can be eustress and not distress. I have another old saying that I like: What does not kill us makes us stronger. Good luck with the job search.

Shep+ (*8*)

First, a (*8*) for you.

I, too, find you should stay while looking for a better job. Even though you might not like the environment, you'de be better off finding a job while employed, otherwise they would think you're a quitter.

I find it fascinating that people have to rely on coke (the bad kind) in order to get their life going. I had my bubble burst as well a long time ago and I can only laugh today because I don't need drugs to feel intoxicated - my mind does that for me. o_O

I wish you the best of luck, though, at finding a new job.

Have you spoken to your boss regarding these issues? If you are at the point of quitting, then what do you have to lose. He might be able to make the situation somewhat better for you, just maybe not perfect. Perhaps you can work from home as well.

Yes, it is easier to find new employment if you are presently employed. Potential jobs opportunities aften close when the hirers see that you quit your last job (or two?)

I'd think it all depends on your ability to adjust to your present circumstances, and on your level of distress.

I think you're just lazy.

I'll bet that no matter what job you have, social benefits always look better.

Get another job first and then move on.

Big mistake don't quit your job i made that mistake and quit my job and now i having a hard time finding a new job.

If they behave well at the office, what do you care what they do outside of it? You're being too over sensitive i think.

I would have been paid much more than what I have to rely on now and was already making plans to save for braces ](*,)

Now I'm back being a hobo with Internet connection.

Going from solitary unemployment to this kind of company was just too much for me.

Hmm. I am giving serious consideration to jacking in my job. Been there 5 years and I have come to realise that I have no enthusiasm for the job, no ambition to go further in my current profession and the company largely sucks.
Unfortunately, the position is safe, has a decent pension scheme, pays a relatively good salary and I have nothing lined up to go to.
I can see me taking the safe option and staying put - at least for the time being.

if you can't cope with this, how do you expect yourself to do in worse situations?

give it a chance, I don't see how them doing coke affects you until you find a better job.

i think...some anxiety disorders are kinda self fulfilling, in that if you avoid certain situations because they make you nervous etc, then the more you avoid them the worse you'll feel when you do have to deal with one.

i don't know how bad it makes you feel, but i would try to stay a little longer, but if you can't handle it then yes, i would quit.
