Today we were in History talking about American politics and out of nowhere somebody said "I like George Bush because he hates gay people". Than to my surprise everbody laughed NCLUDING the teacher. It's like someone saying "I like Hitler because he hated jews". If he happened to say that i'm sure he would have gotten in trouble. I guess gay people get treated differntly. So, does anyone think this kid should have gotten in trouble? If I was the teacher I would have suspended him.

Btw does George Bush hate gay people?....i don't think he does.

as for your professor he should be ashamed of himself and so should the idiot who made the comment. the professor failed to act responsibly in the matter. it just goes to show you there are still morons walking around, even in universities.

that the idiot should be of your generation and with those attitudes is a sad commentary on young adults today. one would have expected more then a stupid comment such as that one.


i think an anonymous note should be left in the professor's box commenting on his behaviours and failure to act appropriately about the matter in his classroom.

I have no idea.

However I don't feel any love from his "base" that he panders to for campaign money, or votes.

It sounds like your classmate is a member of his base.

The laughing that you heard in class today, was it a "funny ha, ha" laugh, or a nervous "I can't believe that dumbass just said that?" kind of laugh?

In our Politically Correct culture people tend to laugh at things that others are thinking, but not saying, and get real uncomfortable and laugh when someone actually says it.

The problem is, Guys like you and Me hear that stuff and we're not sure right away how to deal with it.

I probably would have asked, "Is this a History Class or Social Studies? Because history has shown what happens when everyone thinks like that." Then shared your example.

Most of them just giggled a bit but there were a couple people that had a good riot over that comment...including my teacher.

And no i didn't say anything. I wanted to but I didn't feel that I should be the one to freak out. Perhaps I should have said something.

As far as GW Bush hating gay people -- I doubt it very seriously -- I doubt he really cares one way or the other on a personal level...

I DO BELIEVE he promotes a climate of hate and division to rile up the "christian"right for political gain -- but thats for another forum...

I understand how you feel about not speaking up -- I've done both but SOMETIMES it just happens so quickly I'm left tongue tied...

Today I had a guy at a loading dock talking about the other guy helping out -- he told me that the kid was as queer as a 3 dollar bill -- I thought of a LOT of responses AFTER the fact -- but couldn't think of what to say at the time...

Being as I'm "openly" gay -- it always amazes me that strangers always ASSUME that I'm straight...

George Bush's religious beliefs hates gay people, therefore Bush hates the idea of gay people and what they are, not the people themselves.



Don't quote me on that, I always thought his entire family was a crusade against anyone not white, republican, conservative, and a christian fundamentalist.

That's one of those stupid, attention grabber comments when it comes out of the mouth of senior high schooler or college students. And some people do laugh at stupid comments like that without thinking clearly about the content of the comments. So if you went and asked someone or the teacher after class, their thoughts might be different. They just don't realize that the comments might hurt someone or being racists... Or someone realize it and just don't speak up because most of the people in the class are laughing/giggling...
You can go and speak to your teacher. Ask his/her opinion about the comment, if he/she still shows that he/she is racist against gay people, then do what Croyman and others said...

This is a quality post and what I have come to expect from you. I know there are homophobic teachers, but this sounds like a 12th grade American Government class in highschool. And your observations about the class and we who are gay were right on target.

I would encourage our thread poster, Ilovegaysex to go privately to talk with the teacher. Most will be receptive if it is not confrontational. It is possible that all of this is more misunderstanding than homophobia.

You might have asked him what his reaction would be to someone voicing the "opinion":

I hate (the N word)

I hate Jews

I hate Muslims.

Would he have let that slip by?

I do think I'd report the incident to his department chair and/or an academic dean, but not until you've finished the course and had your grade recorded.

If he seems to discriminate against you in any way, particularly in grading, because you spoke to him about this issue, report him to the department and his academic dean.

Sounds like something one of my rednecked uncles would say. A couple of years later he had to eat his words. His grand daughter came out of the closet and is currently living with her girlfriend.

This sounds like something I would have encountered in grade school or the couple of years I punished myself by going to a Christian university, though, even in those arenas of study there was an accepted policy of tolerance.

The teacher had no right to scold ilovegaysex for questioning his judgment in this matter. It really bothers me when people don't see this as a issue, yet racial, sexist, ageist, you name it comments are intolerable. This is an issue that should be taken up with higher authorities, like others have said.

I don't know what I would have done in your situation when I was in school. I wasn't out then. If I were in the class today, I would have just walked out.
