  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

I'm starting college on Monday...

KT,

You think you are entering a new world?

So are your parents. Remember them. For 18 years, they have been guiding you. Now, you are way more independent. Keep in touch with them.

I'll give you the same tip I give my students: stay one step ahead of the professor. If tomorrow's lecture covers the material in Chapter 2 of your textbook, read that chapter tonight, not tomorrow night.

Don't worry if you don't understand every word. The lecture tomorrow should clear up any difficulties, and if not, you'll be able to ask an intelligent-sounding question in class.

Here's another tip for free: when you're doing independent research, like for a term paper, base it on your own curiosity. Start by asking yourself questions you'd like to know the answer to, than use your research to answer the questions. The simpler and more common-sensical the questions, the better.

Keep coming up with new questions as you go on. This will not only keep you interested, but it will give a much stronger focus to your paper.

My college experience was horrible. It was a large state school and I felt completely alone. Thankfully there were some nice people, and I will always remember them for their kindness. But remember, college has alot of assholes, so you have to stay focused. If I could do my Freshmen year over, I would try to be around the poeple who were nice to me and study more

Hopefully I will return after I pay this tuition off and take some non-major classes

Have fun with it. If you have no fun at college, even in class, then you are doing it wrong, IMO.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have social anxiety so something like this is just so incredibly overwhelming for me. I REALLY don't see myself being too friendly, that's just not who I am. But as long as I pass my classes and don't stick out like a sore thumb, I'll be ok. I'm probably just overthinking everything. I wish I could just shut my brain off for the night.

My best advice is to address problems with your roommate(s) quickly. I was a pretty shy kid, so whenever I was bothered with something I kept it inside and the issues were never solved. I ended up going crazy.

Also, I got this advice when I was a Freshmen and it's quite true: of all the friends you'll make Freshmen year, only a few will stay with you in the end. Basically, everyone's at college to meet new people, so you'll definitely make friends with a lot of people. However, a semester or year later, people start to get into their niche, so expect a few people to grow away from you. It's just natural.

Manage your time, people spend 45 hours a weeks on a college workload. Study for midterms and finals. Don't procrastinate and finish everything on time. Also get to know people in your classes and make study groups. Be serious about college.

I got into this thread a little late. I like this words here. KTheLibra....these are good words to remember.

Have a good time, but remember that is also a time to learn and get that paper in the end. Don't get behind in anything and if you need help, by all means get it and get it as soon as you can. That is most important.

Get to know people. It can be ahrd thing for many, particularly if you are going to a really big university or college. Don't be a loner, or you will be miserable. You have to have friends.

That is why knowing people in your classes is a must. And if the class is small enough, get to know the professor, or he you. Being a person and not just a number is a good thing. Even if it is not your best subject, get o know the teacher, if you can.

Good luck to you. I really mean it. It can be the best of times or it can be a terrible time. And it is a costly one, for you or your parents. Don't take that lightly. With the economy the way it is, be glad you are just beginning and not getting out of school. There are NO JOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully life will turn around, and I believe it will. Go for it!

Study, play, live, work hard, meet people, be (or become) yourself, don't eat only the fried foods, exercise, be involved, do what you want, strive to do more, and be only worried enough that you get what you need to get done.

Relax. You have no idea how much fun you are about to have.

I have to wake up in 8 hours or so for class and I already am an insomniac so even if i tried sleeping I wouldnt be able to because I always get excited the night before going back to class. I love being on campus with all the other hot horny college guys :D

As for social anxiety, I've found it helps to remember that most people are only really interested in themselves. Only occasionally will they even bother to notice you or think about you. So why bother being embarrassed.

Also, whenever you feel like an asshole, remember that everybody else does too.
