the premise of the show is a gay man working for a major sports network. the story follows him dealing with the homophobia of pro sports, being middle-aged, navigating the murky waters of celebrity and balancing his personal and romantic life with career aspirations.

there's a few cliches i'm trying to break away from with the development of this character and story, one being the overly homophobic black parents. the main character is supported, loved and accepted by his parents which is an important image missing from pop and gay culture, another is the character's style which fits neither the typecast limp-wristed fairy nor ubermasculine knuckle-dragging thug. the main character is just a run-of-the-mill regular guy who doesn't steal anybody's attention when he enters a room.

in my dream world a big part of the show would be guest appearances from legendary and up-and-coming athletes playing themselves and sometimes recurring characters. before he passed i had actually started writing an episode that would've featured m. ali. :(

i have drama and comedy in my pocket but i'm going to have to do a lot of boning up on pro sports to cover that aspect of the show, for the most part i loathe sports, playing football and soccer are fun but i don't understand why people pay exorbitant amounts of money to watch men beat each other up, become rich and ten years later end up broke with a host of debilitating physical and mental impairments, not to mention the unspoken financial burden since these arenas and events suck up quadrillions of dollars, avoid paying taxes and pretend to create jobs which are actually only low-paying hot dog vendor jobs while the rich athletes take their money out of state. i guess i should really keep that part to myself.

@raregirl actually on second thought i think i should address the darkside of the industry in addition to the glitz and glamour and fandom.

Yes. I want the ugly side too....it makes the light moments so much better.

And keeps everyone off their balance.

Do you have actual acquaintances who have been the positive parents you are hoping to model?

Teehee. You said boning.

yeah one important aspect of the writing is i want to paint a picture of real life without all the pretense and filters

my parents, they never held my sexuality against me. i would bring my bf with me on holidays and they treated him with the same respect as they do my sisters' partners. it's really important to me to show that some black parents can be progressive and open-minded.

Be sure the script calls for lots of locker room nudity.

the last thing i'm writing this for is to perpetuate sex, if that's your schtick you have every other show ever in existence, this is a vehicle for telling stories.

Just don't make him conflicted about his sexuality.

But do give him a romantic conquest.

And don't let them fuck for about 4 seasons.

ohhhhh no, there's no sexual confusion he's self-assured and confident and not in any way "struggling" with his sexuality. out, proud and happy. don't let them fuck for 4 seasons? that's a bit of a stretch, i was thinking more along the lines of having him on the dating scene for a season or two before he gets serious with anybody. i mean come on now we gotta be realistic here

Just remember...it killed Moonlighting.

I think maybe you have the one that means something...but is elusive and things never quite click.

In the meantime, he can have any number of encounters with [STRIKE]tricks[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]hook-ups[/STRIKE] boyfriends, who become part of the tapestry of the story...just like in real life.
