  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

i'm writing a sports-themed dramedy, sound like a hit or miss?

i never got into it, i knew of it but it looked reeeeeally stupid

It was slapstick a lot of the time...didn't love that part but I liked other things enough to overlook it. The addition of athletes every week was sometimes very awkward too BUT a lot of times it was brilliant and the athletes were perfect...

Sounds like a hit.

Have you previously written for television? Do you have friends in the business? Contacts? An agent? This sounds right for Amazon. Or Logo. I heard the other day that Logo wants to broaden its demographic.

Were you in the UK, and the protagonist from an African or Caribbean immigrant family, the Brits would buy it. It could star Gary Carr, that really cute, totally charming guy who played the American jazz player boyfriend on "Downton Abbey" and Fidel on "Death in Paradise". Come to think of it, he could be your man even if it is set in America.

Perhaps you'll find this stupid, but until this thread I thought you were a woman, not simply because of your screen name and avatar, but because--if I recall correctly--you sometimes refer to yourself as a "girl".

Were you really in jail? Do you really work at Arby's? I tend to take people seriously, and often don't get the joke. If you were in jail, what was the reason?

I'm half expecting a smart-ass answer, but I'd prefer a serious one instead.

I have none of the above, just a wing and a prayer. I was thinking amazon, logo or netflix.

it's not stupid at all, i bounce back and forth from being extremely serious to silly

yes. no. larceny (allegedly) the charges were dismissed it's all gravy

Just make some of them really messy.

And some of them really kind of sweet.

since you're interested in the relationship storylines here's a few ideas i've been kicking around

-clicks well with a new prospect everything goes swimmingly until family/friends get involved and give bad advice which ultimately ruins the relationship

-good new prospect but things fall apart as the main character's star begins to rise and the date can't deal with the lack of privacy, constantly being in the public eye and just a little bit of new-celeb ego from the main guy

-tries dating a pro athlete who turns out just to be using him as a PR prop

-has a romantic relationship with sister's ex husband which, as i said above, strays away from the "main character is always right and righteous" trap a lot of shows fall into

this one is my favorite - is pursued by a downlow athlete who the main character ends up outing for ratings and to increase his stock value on the network

Which character will have your personality and will he be uncut, too?
No drag queens, I hope.

Do you need any investors?

i hate to sound vein but the main character has a lot of me in him, other than the love for pro sports which i absolutely loathe. a lot of his experiences are drawn from my own. i thought about giving him a gay best friend who was in love with him which was originally supposed to be the character based on me but that cliche is soooo played out.

eventually i'll need investors but i think i should get more of the series written before i start looking for investors.

as far as being uncut (how do you even remember that?) i hadn't thought of that although it's definitely something i could write into the show.

You know how they always say ´write what you know´?
You should make that dramedy about streetwalkers instead.

harkie boo you know i can't do this without your support, you're supposed to be my husband how come you never support me?

Maybe because the last time he supported you he had to visit the free clinic 3 times before they found the right meds.
