iMac vs. PC

Something is very wrong. This behavior is very much out-of-character for OSX.

I'd look at bad RAM first; that seems to be the Number 1 problem. You wouldn't put the wrong spark plugs in your car, would you? Have you had the RAM tested?

The other possibility is some kind of software compatibility; All-In-One printers are notorious for this.

If we had a few minutes, with no doubt, we could make your Mac crash-free.

The story happened a year ago or so. There was no hardware failure. The guys at Apple recommended me to reinstall OS X. Which I did and it helped. But it didn't last for long. Some month after that, the logic board started malfunctionig and the local Apple store here in Munich took it into repair for 5 (!) weeks. So you see, my experience with Apple has been rater... mixed :)

Hey guys- Well, I did it...I bought myself a new iMac this weekend and I love it so far. I am still keeping my PC laptop for my business programs, which I still use all the time, but prefer my iMac for all my creative music/audio projects...thanks guys for the recommendations. My personal opinion is that both types of computers have their own thing that they're good at it, which is why I will be using both. Thanks again!

Matty, this begs an obvious question.

How do you know that there's a virus in there if the anti-virus software can't detect it?

I'm asking cuz I don't know--I'm a Macuser who never worries about viruses.

Please inform me.

Hey thats a fair question!!! :D

As a computer technician, I have what most computer technicians call a "Live CD" that has a special operating system on it that runs JUST from the CD. On that I have anti-virus tools loaded.

The advantage of using something like that to detect viruses, is that because Windows itself isn't running, and therefore the virus is not "active", it can't hide itself amongst the windows operating files.
