In Way Over His Head

dadt was a bad blow. He could have ordered the policy change, but like Obama, made the same mistake of trying to negotiate with the repubs. In the end it was Nunn that stabbed us in the back and clinton went along with it.

not very pretty but true, and the reason I resent him as president.

I have many problems with republican politicians, but at least they have the balls to just step up to the plate and act on their social agenda.

the Dems need to as well.

That's the reason you resent Bill Clinton as President? Well that explains a lot about your thought process because your characterization about Clinton and DADT is wrong, and when it was explained to you a month ago you responded to the post and didn't dispute the correct characterization.

Here's how construct wrote it out on June 15:

Your characterization of the Clintons is completely unfair. Let's start with DADT. The President didn't have the added pressure from a complacent gay community to push through non-discrimination in the military. He tried in a matter of weeks after taking office. Sen. Sam Nunn responded with six months of hammering in Senate committee. Nunn was aiming to codify the Reagan policy which was even worse than DADT. DADT was a compromise worked out in coordination with gay leaders like David Mixner and Barney Frank. It's intent was to ameliorate the darconian order already in place by forbidding witch-hunts. That much appears to have worked. It was inadequate but unavoidable given Sen. Nunn's dogged opposition.

Benjamin Franklin had his own idea for what should be on our money. I've found it in print in two forms: "Mind your business", or "Mind your own business".

Franklin was a hoot. He had alot of ideas that roundly got dismissed. have to say... its good he lost out on the national bird thing.

we can even blame republicans for clinton leaving office since it was their idea to term limit presidents.

After FDR, the nation was very much in favor of term limits.

Thanks for the video, Nick. As for the sentiment of the thread though, Obama may be just where he wants to be. Who knows what lurks inside that head of his?

But he was right on target with the money motto.

Besides, his description of the eagle was entirely accurate.

you are quite the scholar!

here is what he said in case anyone is interested...

Franklin's Letter to His Daughter (excerpt)

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him.

"With all this Injustice, he is never in good Case but like those among Men who live by Sharping & Robbing he is generally poor and often very lousy. Besides he is a rank Coward: The little King Bird not bigger than a Sparrow attacks him boldly and drives him out of the District. He is therefore by no means a proper Emblem for the brave and honest Cincinnati of America who have driven all the King birds from our Country . . .

"I am on this account not displeased that the Figure is not known as a Bald Eagle, but looks more like a Turkey. For the Truth the Turkey is in Comparison a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America . . . He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage, and would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his Farm Yard with a red Coat on."

When I first thought about it, I decided the American emblem should be the peregrine falcon. Its very name points to the origins of most Americans -- wanderer -- and a constant aspect of our society -- traveler -- and a continuing source of new folks -- foreigner. Its living habits are much like our own; when young they wander, but in the end they prefer to settle down in a good home. They attack invaders of their territory furiously -- and could advise us on foreign policy, because they rarely if ever venture to interfere in the affairs of those who don't bother them. They are pioneers, and can live almost anywhere -- dense forest, savanna, cliffs, steep mountains, small caves -- and are quite adaptable; they've even taken to living on skyscrapers and high communications towers.

The eagle is a scavenger, living frequently off refuse. The turkey belongs where one of our national holidays puts it, on the dinner table...Hardy, independent, fierce when wrong -- the peregrine is everything America was and should be.

have you ever tried to shoot one of those little buggers? lets just say wild turkeys are not friendly and you better be a damned good shot. If they are after you, you're gonna get spiked. Incredibly agressive animals...lol

The trick is not to be on their level, and not to let them know you're there. Usually it takes a shot at a good range. I think it was Meriwether Lewis who wrote he shot turkeys at ninety yards; I used to be able to hit a rabbit's eye at about that range, though I never tried a turkey from that distance -- the bobbing head makes it difficult, whereas bunnies hop, then stop.

Now I can see well enough to get a deer from about fifty yards; I won't try anything smaller any longer at even that range. :(

Even though you used the word lifelong, are you still counting yourself as a "Democrat …

I've been wrestling with that for two years now.

So far I remain a Democrat. I'm steeped in the Democratic tradition and even though my party has gone astray I'm reluctant to abandon it. And it'll be an ice age in hell before I register Republican.

who intends to vote in the 2010 midterms for … Democrats?"

Yes I'll vote for Democrats this November.
