Ina Garten Refuses Make A Wish Foundation Request

I feel myself torn on a lot of the comments people have posted on the site, but I think it comes down to this:

"What celebrity would want to endure anything like this? To those that think anyone should be bullied into donating time or money for any cause or charity."

"Even if Ina did have “free time,” she certainly wasn’t obligated to fulfill this wish (though I still think it would have been nice if she did.) She does not deserve this kind of public flogging."

I wish more celebrities would donate their time to wishes, but on the other hand, they shouldn't be forced or guilted into it, and if they are, it feels like the wish would have been cheapened because the celebrities heart isn't in it.

In my limited experience with celebrities, getting them to give money is nearly impossible, but many of them will give time or an endorsement.

Asking for what sounds like a whole episode of her show is asking for too much - sick/kid or not.

That's a bit much. I thought he just wanted to meet with her and watch her cook or try to help.

Hopefully the kid will be fine and will be joining JUB when he is 18.

I think this lady could have probably managed, but I'm sure some bigger celebrities get so many of these requests they simply couldn't handle them all.

Like, who wants to bet that hundreds of little kids say "I want to meet Harry Potter!" I'm sure Daniel Radcliffe is drowning in those, but one just can't please everyone on Earth, no matter how sick and young they may be.

Even if you really do have the time, you shouldn't be obligated to give to charity... if she doesn't want to, she doesn't want to.

Little Timmy's MAW is that all the members of the LGB community be relocated to Antarctica for the rest of their lives...

"What LGB members? What do you mean 'no'? You should honored that little Timmy is thinking about the majority of the population that are not LGB...he is thinking about their happiness...this would stop all the fighting over silly gay rights and other nonsense."

Or...a little more realistic...
You should feel honored that those beggers feel you are financially stable enough to ask you to drop money into their tin cup...how dare you say no.

You should feel honored that the government wants to raise your taxes to give the money to those that do not want to work so that they can live comfortable lives...they are only thinking of the happiness of others....how dare you say no.

etc etc etc etc

She, nor anyone else is obligated to do anything...though I will say that it would have been nice for her to grant the wish, but she certainly should not be bashed for not doing so.

If the story is true, I am sorry Ina didn't grant the wish or try to accommodate it in some way. If it truly was impossible for whatever reason, her people should have done a better job of handling the request so that Ina didn't end up with a black eye over this.

I can't F-ing believe that people are actually burning piles of her cookbooks over this !

People, did we learn nothing from Footloose ?

I hear if you play her show - the one where she makes "company pot roast" - backwards you can clearly hear, "I will cook because I worship with Satan. Sweet, delicious Satan."

Ridiculous.

What a cunt. It's not like the kid wanted to spend the day with her, or do something incredibly stupid or something she doesnt LIKE to do, all he wanted was to COOK with her.. and considering she LOVES to cook, you would think she would MAKE the time to cook with him considering the circumstances. But no, she's too busy trying to make some cash off her book or make more cash doing something else.

I've done some volunteer work with MAW as well, and I've always found their work to be pretty spot-on. No, nobody should be made to feel like they have to grant these wishes. But for the most part, these "wishes" are fairly easy to grant from the vantage point of the celebrity. It almost always comes down to what they call a "meet-and-greet". The celebrity comes in, they hug, autographs are signed, there's some generic chit-chat, the kid gets a T-shirt, the celebrity leaves. Half an hour, an hour tops. And most celebrities don't have any problem granting said wishes, because 1. they know they're not that difficult to do, 2. they don't mind doing them, and 3. (cynicism alert) it doesn't hurt the public image any.

I can understand (as said above) somebody like Daniel Radcliffe or Justin Bieber would be tough to secure (although it appears the Biebster has done the MAW thing before). But I can't imagine there's a long line of kids waiting to meet the Contessa. If for whatever reason she decided she didn't want to go this route, the smart move would've been to autograph a cookbook with a personal note to send to him.
