"Indiana Jones" cracks whip at box office opening
The new "Indiana Jones" movie grossed a hefty $25 million from its first day in North American theaters, independent industry analysts reported on Friday.
That tally ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Thursday debut on record and bodes well for a movie industry looking to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" to help shake the movie business out an early summer slump.
The highly anticipated adventure flick from Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures is on track to overtake last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean" film as the biggest opening on a U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers, said the film's opening Thursday performance was robust enough without being so strong as to diminish its weekend audience.
If its Friday-through-Monday box office tally crosses the $140 million mark, the film would exceed last year's Walt Disney Co's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" as the biggest North American opening yet for the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.
"They have a strong shot at meeting or exceeding that Pirates of the Caribbean number last year," Dergarabedian said.

Looks like it's gonna take more than two mere weeks before the new Indy adventure finds its way down at the box office.
Everyone is bashing the hell out of this film. They did it for the money, thus the horrible result. They should have left it alone. The film will be gone in two weeks time, working it's way down at the box office.

: aka Henry Jones II, Professor Jones, and now . . .Colonel Jones? Well aside from him mysteriously being a colonel which wasn't really explained, Indy was by far the best character. Yes he definitely shows his age, but I hand it to Spielberg and Lucas for working his age into the story about as good as anyone could.
: New Jones' kid on the block. Henry Jones III. Possibly the second best character in the movie, although this doesn't say a whole lot. He had some good action scenes, but he wasn't given very many interesting, witty things to say that I would expect Indy's offspring to have. But, Shia was pure eye candy. Every time I saw him on screen in those jeans I wanted to reach out and jump him. His Tarzan scene was silly and misplaced though.
: The villainous. Frankly, she was a mess. What a waste of Blanchett's big talent. And zero chemistry (of any kind) between her and Indy's characters. She was the most disappointing aspect of this film for me.
: John Hurt's in this movie, eh, I never knew. Not much to say here. Pretty much another waste of a big talent. He played a professor who temporarily lost his mind. I didn't really care.
: I always liked the opening scenes in Indy movies. This one wasn't quite as exciting, but I was still intrigued. It was clever how they made you think the Russians were after the Ark. But they were after something else which was almost equally as exciting.
: The premise is much better than I imagined. It just kind of fell apart in execution, especially at the end. The alien story was actually working out well with the archeology stuff, until the end which made zero sense.
WTF? Mind control. Knowledge. Other dimensions. Spaceship. If you are trying to figure out what these all have in common, then join the club.
