lets talk, i am SO bored right now because i dont know anyone else who is ever awake at 3 am

about me: im 19, not diagnosed with chronic insomnia, but being awake at 3-4 am is normal for me, i have trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. and apparently my dad, my grandpa and one of my cousins dont sleep well either though i dont know if its a genetic thing.

so, who else is out there?

have you ever tried the "intentionally only grant yourself 4h of sleep 3 days in a row, then try to sleep normal as long as possible" thing?

the problem in that is i get about a 4 hours of sleep every night anyway.

sleeping pills suck they dont put you to sleep, they just relax your muscles, unless its perscription and my doctor doesnt want to start someone as young as me on sleeping pills. what worked best for a little while was some recording my roommate found that talks you through sleep but now theres too much spinning around my head for it to work.

its ok though, im over it. i made this thread mostly to talk to other people so we could collectively complain about our problems and talk about everything that doesnt work ](*,) ](*,) you know, just for the fun of it.

I feel for you guys. I suffered from this once and found it hard to cope. It was caused by side effects to pain killers issued by the doc, I preferred the pain to the insomnia.

I have insomnia as well. I'm pretty much nocturnal. Now that I don't have any more classes to take, I just stay awake and toil away on some experiments in lab at night. My "protege" is scared to work all alone in at night in the lab, so she picks up where I leave off in the morning. One good thing about being alone in the lab is that I can have my music playing from a stereo instead of having to use my ipod.

Last year, I had 14-hour days of taking classes, lab, and being a TA, which tired me out to get a good 6-8 hours of sleep at night.

When I was an undergrad I was nocturnal too. I'd study at night, take class in the morning, sleep from 11-5, have another class, and then start studying again. Sometimes I'd drink with my roommates instead of study, and then I'd just sober up the last few hours before class.

Me too. I probably get a good night's sleep just once a week. I usually have to take something to help me sleep. My problem is that my head keeps spinning. I just can't relax.

Same here. Have you tried visualizing your to do list on a chalk board and mentally erasing it? It doesn't work for me, but that's what my doctor suggested. Hopefully, someone will benefit from that lovely advice. :D

I make physical lists (and lists within those lists). But my insomnia stems from OCD and it's gotten much better since I discovered lists.

i didnt know insomnia could start as a baby that sucks! mine hit around middle school

ugh i could never make physical lists. that sounds like such a hassle..what do you list anyway? i could see my insomnia being partially OCD related too i suppose, though my things are cracks in the sidewalk, and using different writing utensils in the same notebook and folded paper and stuff, i hardly think it keeps me awake at night.

oh hey, now that you mention it my dad said he used to do that with me..except now i drive and that could get dangerous](*,) <--just imagine that being a car and a wall

well i am an insomniac but i classify myself as being insomniatic

Going to be at 3-4am is almost normal for me lmao. That is not really insomnia. Maybe its just a college thing.

I have had bouts of insomnia before and it was one of the most painful experiences I have endured.

Usually multiple occurences of insomnia implies there is another mental disorder. That is how I learned about other conditions I had.

In other words, we're all really just nuts. Oh dear.

I've always been a poor sleeper, but mostly just consider myself a night person.

I find that if I work night hours, like a graveyard shift, I sleep fairly well during the day.

Maybe it has something to do with a defective biological clock...

Hurrah! A fellow night owl.

My biological clock has been defective since day one. My Mom says that by the time I was 3-4 weeks old, I would sleep through the night...as long as that night began between 4 and 5 AM. 8 to 9 hours is no problem but it starts very, very late (or early depending on your point of view).

Worst job ever was one that started at 6 AM. I didn't last long. I have never, ever been able to get to bed successfully before midnight.

well whether its a defective biological clock, OCD, stress, or depression...im awake again at almost 4 am. too bad theres nothing good on tv at this time.

Hmmm...I thought depression was supposed to make you feel sleepy.
