Inspired by the Dirt thread . . .

I can think of a few things that are perhaps particularly English.

Free milk at school.
Free Orange juice at home.
Malt extract, a spoonful a day.
Milkmen.
Saturday morning films for children.
 
David, are those post-WWII initiatives, or perhaps WWII health initiatives that eventually died out? Or is it something unrelated to the war?

Milkmen go back much further than WWII and still exist. My mum still has milk delivered to her doorstep.
 
No, I meant the free milk and juice bit.

I get the evolution of dairies and delivery systems.

My guess was that the nutrition studies performed post-WWI revealed how damaging privation was to a generation, so WWII triggered some remediations to prevent a recurrence. The bit I remember is that protein shortage in expectant mothers led to lower IQs after WWI.
 
I've heard of free milk, but not free fruit juice. Margaret Thatcher abolished free school milk when she was Education Secretary in the 1970s.
 
No idea what the reasons were but I was in a foster home so perhaps it had something to do with that.
 
One of the things I strongly support is food or commodity giveaway by the government. We spend so much money subsidizing huge agribusiness interests, then the products of those subsidies should go to the people.

Had not noticed it. Peaches could have asked it to be removed since it turned ugly. There was that nasty bit of diversion before the OP posted his age.
