Interracial Gay Men… in a Major Bank Ad

A friend snapped this for me with her cell when we were out. She had to stop at the machines, and while I waited I noticed this poster in the front of the building. It had the same image on the other side, facing the street. There were several other similar ones, which featured other families and a similar message.

This was not in the gay village. In fact, it was in a residential family neighbourhood location, with several junior-middle schools in the immediate area, and several Christian Churches within walking distance. In fact, one was right across the street and a few steps down the block.

The bank is TD Canada Trust. They have been a long time supporter of equality for all people, and are inclusive of the LGBT community.

Is this ad or its placement surprising?

Would it be considered a controversy in your country/community?

Would you expect a poster like this in your home town?

If there was such a poster from a major bank in your town/city, what would be the reaction?

Do you believe your community would have a harder time dealing with two men in a romantically suggestive pose, or the fact that they are an interracial couple?

If you walked past this ad with your grandmother, what do you think she'd say?

Either or both. I tried to make the questions pretty open-ended in that regard. Pun intended.

I thought it would be interesting to get perspectives from individual who may live in areas where that aspect of the ad would be just as "bad" or "worse" than the fact that they are two men in a romantically suggestive pose.

I try to cover all spectrums to further intelligent conversation.

It wouldn't be surprising to see that unless the person who is homophobic takes offense to it because it's two men. But then for someone who doesn't believe in interracial relationships could be offended that way.

I don't see any issue with the ad, I think that it's good that they see all aspects of relationships and have all kinds of ads depicting straight couples too, or even family.

I usually avoid looking at adverts but I'd be more noticing how many cheesy-looking models they got to sit in the same chair.

There is a very clear reason why my country has only produced one gay-themed movie in all the cinematic years. One.
But the controversy would only stir around the religious leaders. We citizens don't give a fuck about it. In the end, nobody cares and the people infuriated go much ado about nothing

She would probably say the woman sitting is so badly tanned and she shouldn't go bald (seriously!)

Is this what we want to teach our kids? That this is normal? That it is ok to be like that? To randomly place furniture -- ugly furniture -- outside your house? I am not against this, I have many friends with shit decorating skills, but there must be some limit. I don't like how they are shoving this alternative homestyle down our throats.

I don't think they are gay because no gay man will be seen in that ugly armchair. And if my grandmama walked passed this picture she would probably comment how absolutely stupid of them to put an armchair outside of the house. What if it rains?

If God wanted us to have chairs outside of the house, He (peace be upon him) would have designed umbrellas attached to them. But He didn't so please respect the natural designs of furniture. He loves you but He hates wet upholstery.

I'm expecting that ad to be pulled any day now. Companies have tried to push the envelop with a "gay ad" in the past, and it's always resulted in "WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!"

Wells Fargo and USBank (among others) have GLBT marketing departments and ad campaigns. However, I would recommend Charles Schwab as #1 for gay friendliness.

I think you missed the point.... He wasn't saying there was a problem with it, he was saying how this almost never happens in ads. As the guy above said, we are slowly moving in the right direction.

I'm tickled, as well, that TD has been buying up all those failed banks in the US and is getting the TD brand through the north east US.

But Ram is right.

The chair is fugly.

And they have been using it for some time now.

And yes................get ready for it.............I wrote a tongue in cheek letter to the TD brass about a year ago complaining about their ugly chair. And the cheesy vinyl upholstery (waterproof btw..)

But look carefully. You'll notice that in the homo ad, the boys are actually trying to cover up more of the chair than the straight couple is. Proof that the bank and the photographer recognize that no self-respecting queer couple would want this on their deck, let alone inside their house.

And I hadn't noticed it before....but isn't it the same guy sitting on the arm in both pics????

Didn't he realize that being photographed with his wife and his boyfriend in the same chair might backfire?

Is he an American Republican by any chance??????
