Why did Bernadette Peters leave the show before the Tonys? And was Phylicia Rashad nominated as well? That clip was interesting because I've always read that Rashad was a good replacement, but judging from that clip I prefer Peters.

I directed a production of Into the Woods two years ago. Great challenge - interesting script and score ( tho I agree with detractors who say the 2nd Act is deeply flawed, not to mention a downer LOL ) Used Bruno Bettelheims work on wish fulfillment as a sort of guide. Loved these clips, thanks for postin' `em, agaymale. And weren't the sets interesting !!

Bernadette Peters was hired at the last minute after Betty Buckley was let go. She did it more or less as a favor to Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine (not that she didn't reap the benefits). She was already contracted to do another project directly after, so she could only stay with the show for a very limited time. Bernadette Peters was nominated for a Tony, but not Phylicia Rashad.

Omg, my favorite musical! besides maybe the music man just cause of the funny story , but it's really hard to decide which is better

I will be forever grateful to a certain Richard I once knew who introduced me to this musical.

I just love the story (or stories). And this is where I (finally) learned the difference between "good" and "nice".

Since this show, I've always strived for the "good". And been suspicious of the "nice".

I do love Bernadette, but Joanna Gleason was my favorite in that show.

She's a truly gifted comedian, but she's never achieved the success she deserves.

You're right. I see her in supporting roles in movies once in a while. I also remember her playing Bette Midlers friend and manager in 'Bette.'

^^Funny, I was thinking about that show, while I was typing that post.

I wonder if Phylicia Rashad could have been nominated for a Tony because Bernadette Peters was in the show so briefly. When Larry Kert took over Bobby in Company he was nominated. But I guess that whole situation was too different to compare ....

Anyway, another major benefit Bernadette Peters reaped was being on the Original Cast recording. Something both Phylicia Rashad and Larry Kert missed out on. (Though Larry Kert got the Original London Cast album.)

Okay, I'll stop my B'way trivia musing. ;)

I think the difference is that B-Peasy was in ITW for several months before she left to film Slaves of New York plus her's was a scheduled departure. Tony voters had ample opportunity to see her performance. Dean Jones left Company just over a month after opening and he had missed performances within that month. It seems like it was just one of those "one time/special circumstances" situations.

I also agree that Joanna Gleason gave an amazing performance in Woods (apparently so did the Tony voters--she won). She was also terrific in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

I would have loved to see Phylicia Rashad... I've heard that she was MUCH better than that performance suggests. I'm also kicking myself for not seeing Vanessa Williams (she and the cow were really the only parts of that revival that got good reviews), but the tour I was on lasted longer than the revival :(
