Just wrapping up my first week of having an iPad, and yesterday I got to really enjoy it.

I attended a large meeting where I pulled out my iPad. I have it filled with spreadsheets that I referenced during the meeting, so I had all my data live.

Key points of the meeting needed to be share with coworkers. Instead of taking notes on paper and then later transcribing them, I took my notes directly in an email, and at the end of the meeting hit SEND.

I was in bliss at the prospect of being able to do this all the time.

^^I'm glad you wrote this, but not for the reason you may think. It may be human nature to rain on someone's parade. God knows I do it, but it's not kind and not productive. Thanks for showing me what it looks like when I do it. It gives me motivation to reply to someone's joy more positively.

Nah, I said what I meant to say. But if you need me to elaborate: I enjoyed the ease and simplicity of just pulling a little binder case from my bag, take my notes and sending them immediately. It did everything I wanted it to do, even though that seems to upset some fucktards.

It was an innovation for me. It did what I wanted, in a way no other product does right now. I'm aware of netbooks but they don't suit my purposes and tastes. And it seems plain my interests and tastes are not yours, but what is less plain is why that provokes a douchey attitude on your part.

-I don't like the inherent elitism of apple enthusiasts. (Especially when Apple takes money from Microsoft.)

-I don't like the inherent retardation of buying variations of the same product (with diferent names), Ipod touch, iphone, ipad.

I didn't ask for praise either. I gave information for those who might find it useful, and relayed that I was happy with the product for my purposes. If you want to start the 85Billionth product vs product wankfest go right ahead. I don't give a shit.

What apps were you using and were you typing on the touchpad or is there a way of handwriting notes on it?

For my note taking I was just in the email app, typing on the touchpad. One of my goals is to have a dedicated document for each of my usual work meetings, where I can type in all those notes and action items. At a minimum I can use Pages which cost $10 (and which will be useful in other ways too), but I'm looking for an app that's more geared to that particular purpose.

It will be such a huge improvement over hand writing everything in a notebook and sorting through it later!

There are some apps that seem to approximate handwriting, but I'm personally very comfortable with the touchpad.

I have tons of data in dozens of spreadsheets and they're all in my iPad now, and i use the Numbers app for those. I used to drag around printed version of many of them so I'd have everything with me at a moment's notice. There's a nice little pdf viewer too.

Work does provide me with a laptop, but it' not something I want to carry around all the time, and I find the pulling it out, activating it, etc to be a chore and a distraction. What I liked about the iPad is its ease for casual use - I just slip it out of my bag, open it like I would any paper notebook and get to business.

(Admittedly, because it's a new product I've tried to be extra discreet with it this week, sitting at the very back of the meeting so as not to be noticed. I like using it, but don't want it to be distracting. Hopefully it will be in greater circulation soon.)

I have a laptop from work as well and although I don't mind carrying around, I don't like using it and not only because it takes over 5 minutes to boot (suspend function works shit, so I don't use it).

Monday they are announcing the pricing plans for Europe, but I'll have to wait another three weeks to buy one.

By the way, I heard some criticism regarding screen quality. How is yours? Any noticeable bleeding around the edges?

I don't use a notebook in those settings, or a laptop, because I don't like the feel.

I didn't mean the application technology is new, so much as that it's a new experience for me to be able to do these things because now I have a tool that suits my preferences.

I've always been a "hunt and peck" typist using two fingers (and thumb on the space key), even though I type frequently. As luck would have it, my typing style is very well suited to the touchscreen.

It might not work so well in a one-on-one meeting, but this was more of a conference and it worked well.

I agree about the laptop. I don't like the weight, the boot up, or the barrier it creates with other people in meetings. The iPad is more like a paper notebook with respect to weight, access and minimal-barrier, though obviously not exactly the same.

It won't be the right device for everyone, but I'm very happy with it.

If you are on not later than winxp, there's a function call hibernation. It doesn't take 5 mins to take you where you left off unless you have lappy of a decade ago or have installed bloated softwares. But then again, over 5 mins for booting is just too much. I think it's time to take it to service center. I'm using win7 ultimiate on c2d and it takes me less than 15sec in hibernation mode and suspend mode is just within a blink of an eye.

It's a decent laptop although still running XP. It takes almost 2 minutes to start from hibernation mode and I always end up having to re-boot afterwards. If it belonged to me it would obviously work faster. My Mac Book, for instance, boots in just under a minute and from hibernation in just a few seconds. But the work one doesn't belong to me and there isn't a lot I can do about it. The point, however, is not to replace a laptop, but to have an additional device that enhances it.
