iPad Win

I agree about the laptop. I don't like the weight, the boot up, or the barrier it creates with other people in meetings. The iPad is more like a paper notebook with respect to weight, access and minimal-barrier, though obviously not exactly the same.

Oh ... well then for you apple made something aeons ago. unfortunately they weren't "cool" back then, so Palm got all the fame.

I present you .. the Apple Newton Message Pad:

I had a palm or two some years ago, pre-iPhone. They were helpful, though not nearly so helpful as the iPad.

So far the iPad is providing most of the things I fantasized about for a few years - and a couple of things that I hadn't thought of but like very much. The few things it's not doing seem on the horizon, so I'm a happy guy.

Seriously, though, comparing the iPad to a laptop isn't apples-to-apples (so to speak). I think the iPad is missing some things I'd like it to have but by and large it fills a need.

True! I've told people who ask me about it that it is NOT a complete replacement for a computer.

But it can fill enough of a niche (depending on your usage) to prolong the life of a computer, or decrease the need for more computers. My partner and I each have our own laptops which aren't oooold, but we'd begun to think about replacements. With our iPads I think we'll wait a good deal longer to refresh our laptops, and might only buy one instead of two when the time comes.

Johann, I sort of split computer users (of frequency in their personal lives) into two groups, those who enjoy dealing with how they work, and those who care that they work.

Those in the former group get almost giddy when something doesn't work because they want to get in and figure it out and make it work. Not surprisingly this group dominates tech boards.

I'm more of the latter group, and I suppose most seniors are too. Even though I get called in to do tech support for my neighbors and friends because I know more than they do, I don't give a shit about a lot of it. I want a product that works well for my needs, and whether I could get something cheaper or more unwieldy to do the same thing is beside the point.

Purple, your zeal is not too uncommon, but a couple of the things you wrote struck me as downright odd. To wit:

" (Especially when Apple takes money from Microsoft.)"

Huh? Microsoft was the original shark-of-the-sea. It's been sued countless times for predatory business practices.

MS is an apple share holder.

Whatever the reason, the sales of the iPad have dramatically exceeded expectations.

The reasons? Apple is hip and cool.
Some time ago when they weren't they actually did make innovative products (see my post on the newton above). But nobody cared.

Now they have money, now they make lifestyle products.

^^ older people seem to have problems aiming a mouse at an icon and then clicking without moving off the icon. I've watched my father struggle with it time and again. I think the directness of aiming the finger makes it easier.

The European prices just came out today and about as was predicted in various blogs, it comes in at about $100 more than in the US.

The data plans are about $17/calendar month without a contract; better than I expected.

I just placed my order.

By contrast, I have noticed that Apple and Linux geeks, are more than happy to help the newbie.

My personal anecdote: my neighbor and friend is a very well educated physician, but is helpless in the face of technology. Her husband is a major Linux freak and refuses to deal with anything else. After she spent a year unable to do almost anything with her own computer she asked me to help. She's all Appled up (at her request, not my suggestion) and is happy now. Her husband just sits threes stewing about how evil Apple and Microsoft are, but she's able to do what she wants to do at last. I don't know that he even enjoys using a computer as much as he enjoys them not working.

He's kind of an asshole which I'm sure is not representative of most Linux users. But they illustrate my point: all he cares about is how it works, and all she cares about is that it works.

*shrug* until my mother got her new netbook I had installed her an old pentium2 with debian running x11 with the xfce window manager. configured to update and boot manually. my initital goal was that if she has any problems i don't want to drive over all the time and instead could just ssh in.

what should i say .. i never needed to except one time where she couldn't read an e-mail that someone sent her with an old version of outlook express (eek ..).

oh and she didn't even know what she was using then. her netbook now has windows on it (for other reasons), and she manages to get along just fine. only left and rightclick still confuse her a bit :)

JonesHere: Glad the iPad is working well for you.

Just my 2 cents, take it for what its worth.

iPad was never aimed at geeks in general so Windows has nothing to do with it. Sad to say if it was it wouldn't have taken off the way it has. Geeks are far out numbered by the number of average people. The average person only cares about something working which as been mentioned in this thread, while the average geeks not only care that it works but how it works. (Me included in that.) But I do not agree that all geeks suffer from tunnel vision. I'm no Apple or Microsoft fan boy, as I believe both companies charge too much for their products as well as have restricting licensing that just shouldn't be allowed. This however does not stop me from recommending the best product to people who value and ask me for my opinion.

Anyone who wants to complain that the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPad are all clones of the same device clearly doesn't understand the open market. They each fill in roles that people are willing to pay for (it's also why there are so many version of the iPad). Now I will say that I'm sure the iPad has been on the road map since the first iPhone/iPod touch. If you look at the devices you can clearly see the evolution of the device that we have now, and how it builds on top of each other software and hardware wise.

Though the iPad is in essence a giant iPod Touch (not a bad thing mind you), its intended to fill the gap that you have as a multimedia consumption device that netbook's and laptops just don't fit. I've wanted to see a device like the iPad come out for years, simply because of its form factor. It makes (in theory) a great travel device. It also should not be compared to a netbook or a laptop as there ultimate goals are not the same.

The interface of the iPad overall is a good interface for that type of device, especially for the people it was intended for. It was kept simple for mass appeal and it surely has done that. I do think its a bit over priced but thats expected, no this isn't a slight at Apple its just the plain truth.

Lol @ geek war. I think that was won a long time ago. We're the ones jailbreakin' your iPhones and flashing your iPod's firmwares.

Im sorry though if my comments have negatively affected anyone's sense of iDentity.

Quite simple.

-I don't like the inherent elitism of apple enthusiasts. (Especially when Apple takes money from Microsoft.)

Hmmm, the only elitism I see in this thread is your own.

-I don't like the inherent retardation of buying variations of the same product (with diferent names), Ipod touch, iphone, ipad.

That doesn't even make sense. Every technology company sells multiple variations of their products.

-A lot of homos who don;t know dick about technology, think Apple is the greatest. (because it's shiny, because it's overpriced, because you're considered artsy if you own one, because of the rainbow apple logo...who knows).

A strange forum to use homophobic slurs. And they haven't used a rainbow logo in over ten years.

What elitism, have i endorsed or even mentionned a single brand so far?

Can you explain the functional difference between an Ipod Touch, an IPhone, and IPad? cuz i don't see one.

homophobic slurs LOL get the fuck outta here ( my use the term homo is analogous to black people calling eachother ni**ers.)

MS is an apple share holder.

Incorrect. MS bought non-voting Apple stock in the 90s at Apple's invitation. At the time it suited both companies: Apple needed the money to survive, and MS needed a visible OS competitor to satisfy the anti-monopoly suits they were facing. Those non-voting shares have long been sold, and MS have no significant sharehold in Apple Inc.

To Joneshere:

Congrats on your new gadget, I'm glad you like it! Ignore the vitriolic Apple-haters, they're lost in "old-world" paradigm, failing to see that function is sometimes above features for real-world users.

I'd like to see them read an e-magazine on the bus one-handed while standing with their netbook. Or see them wiping food splashes from between their netbook keys after using it as a recipe book.

Is the iPad for everybody? Of course not. Hell, it's no use to me - I have 2 laptops, three desktops, a media centre and an iPhone in my home.

But the hater-crew seem to be the types who can't project themselves into other people's shoes, who can't seem to recognise that their own requirements may be completely different to the requirements of others. But where the anger comes from, I don't know. I wonder if Purplebic gets angry at people who buy Porsches instead of Fords?

If you can't see the elitism in your posts here, with words like "fucktard", "Fanboy" and your "my features are better than yours" comparison, you're not trying. You belittled the OP as being stupid, even "raped by Apple", without knowing anything about him. You suggested your own, cheaper hardware is better than his, without knowing or understanding his requirements from a device.

An iPhone is different from an iPod Touch because it has a 3G phone, a camera, a magnetometer and GPS functionality. If you don't understand the difference between a 4 inch touch screen and a 10 inch touch screen, and the implications that has for UI design, you're not trying again.

You should consider using emoticons when you type. Your "homo" reference, coupled to the other rant in your posts, come across as aggressive and homophobic.

As you say, and I agree, it's not for everyone.

I'm somewhat baffled by odd claims about how some people like it because it's aesthetically pleasing. I'm of an age when things being pleasing was considered good, and that form and function were good things.

Sorry but if i paid twice as much for half the features my own ass would hurt from the obvious ass reamin' i just received from Apple.

okay so an Iphone can get you laid :) seriously though, i see people who own all 3 gadgets, and like, 3-4 Ipods...this is why, i call these products fashion statements (or accessories).

Ok i know some breeders hang here, but still, i suck dicks, no matter what i say, i couldn't possibly insult anyone else worse than myself lol. You're just too sensitive.

Sony laptops cost more than HP's. HPs cost more than Dell. Zunes cost more than Sony MP3 Walkmans. Generic-brand cookies cost less than the name brands. Do you get equally angry and call people names when they make such decisions about which devices suit their needs?

Some people also have different watches, shoes, belts, jewellery to go with their outfits. Some people paint their houses coz they get bored with the colour scheme. Personally, I own one phone that is also my music player - but I don't begrudge people who make aesthetic choices. If they have the money, let them enjoy it how they see fit. There was no evidence in the OP that suggests his iPad was purchased for style over substance: quite the opposite, he spoke specifically about its functionality. And as he said above, why are aesthetics sneered at anyway? People often buy cars, furniture, clothes, homewares, based on aesthetics. Why can't portable devices be aesthetically pleasing?
