of course not. i have a lot of "fun" stuff on my machines, gadgets and all kinds of things. it's just nothing that you need.

but the reason that i wrote this is that a big majority of the iphone users never ever used the phone productively. they use it for texting, phoning and sometimes for surfing. also they have like 30+ apps where you can make lightsaber sounds or watch paint dry. it's great fun, and some have even more fun annoying their peers with it - but if that is a reason to buy something at this price, it's a wrong reason.

go on the street, look for iphones and ask people to show you why it is good. ~60-70% will pull up some fun app to prove you so.

For me the ultimate arbiter of what's worth the price is now much someone enjoys the product the paid for.

Whether it's designer clothes or a custom paint job on a car or some app, there are many, many things that empirically are not necessary, but bring the purchaser some level of satisfaction.

As a result I must disagree on what is a "wrong reason" and assert that personal satisfaction with the value of the purchase is the only thing that really counts.

I mean, let's be clear... my feelings aren'y hurt, I just totally don't get why people like Purpleishthingamahootie (I can't be arsed to scroll up and see how he spells it) feel the need to go on for pages and pages about how stupid I am, or how I "make tacky porn" (I don't think he's told us much about himself or what he does for a living that makes him such an expert in his mind) or how "you know some basic html" as a failed attempt to belittle me.

People can dislike a product (I sure can't see any use for any Microsoft Product) but the out-of-proportion personal attacks just baffle me.

Right but then... I still don't understand why anyone would buy a game system that only plays games and DVDs. A computer can do anything an Xbox can. People spend thousands of dollars on their game systems and all it does for them is help them get fat and improves their hand-eye correlation.

But you don't see threads like this going on for pages and pages with obnoxious personal attacks on gamers. Again... why is YOUR phone so good? Why is your netbook SO much better than my iPad that it requires people piling on the OP for over 100 posts for just saying that he loves his new gadget?

There's virtually nothing we do today - from running businesses to to cooking to maintaining friendships to fighting wars - that wasn't done before personal computers ever existed. It's a created demand.

(I think you could instead say computers met the demand of providing people with ways to do the same things they've always done more quickly, easily and creatively. And that would describe what Apple and others have done.)

As for the homo thing, i addressed that on the first page. Get over it, you've been living in the states too long, you see homophobes (commies and terrorists too?) everywhere. Though i can understand your age-groups' sensibilities on that. My generation has 0 problem referring to each other as cocksuckers, fags, homos, you name it. We just own those terms.

umm .. no. i want to see you make three 3d renderings or create virtual worlds without a computer. computers can be efficient and speed things up. i'm all for building better machines, but there we are back to the root of this debate. the iPad is not doing something better, it's just more convenient for some people .. and even that is debatable.

and about purplebics slurs here .. do you really take them personal? most of them were quite laughable and to me fitting into what is to be expected in those "holy wars" without a real merit. that's kinda what I mean in the other post about the rough tone of geek wars ;)

Yeah, too bad, but it's probably a moot point anyways because I like physical books and having bookshelves with a chaotic display of colours. I might try the electronic versions of magazines, technical manuals and travel guides... stuff like that. We'll see.

As for my skills...:
SQL, PHP, JavaScript/AJAX, CSS, HTML/XML (and other languages in the past); I can build computers, swap & fix parts; I know my way around linux & win systems; I can flash the firmwares of many proprietary devices; etc
 
Then let's see you produce something like facebook. (Functionality-wise, i mean). :-)
