iPad Win

All of the things that we're enjoying about our iPads are things that you and purpledic say you've been doing for years on your own portable devices. And great... maybe you have.. but we prefer it on the device WE have..

Hey, this helped me to realize the issue.

The tech forum can have a tendency to be like a religious fundamentalist forum, and that's what's gone on here.

Saying I like my iPad is the equivalent of saying I'm a Jew to a Fundamentalist Christian. There's no room for different opinions experience - just a One Right Way And That Is All. You can't even be treated with the basis respect of knowing your own experience without a Fundamentalist telling you you're wrong.

lol don't try to tell me that bottled water is only sold in the areas where tap water is chlorinated.

oh and please .. i am no apple hater, they have good hardware and mac os x is pretty annoying in many points (or better: most of the mac software is fucking idiotic) but the os itself is a good one. but that doesn't mean i don't get to criticize the hype around new apple products or the people who get sucked into jobs reality distortion field.
geez for some time i developed a software for disabled people .. try to see that perspective once. and no, a touch keyboard does not help most of them. a touch os is a different thing, but the iphone os depends too much on dragging and different kinds of movements. anyway this is drifting offtopic.
you cannot compare this to vhs vs betamax or to become a bit more recent blue ray vs hd dvd. did you see anybody here making a fuss over that? nope. did you see anybody here coming here and preaching how great his hd dvd is to justify his expenses? nope ..

Why are you annoyed by something no one is making you use?

It's like straight people who are upset that gay people get married.

Like I said, tech fundamentalism.

hu? I tried it, I was annoyed. That's why I do NOT use it. But contrary to what you might think, I tried it first. Yep nobody forced me to do it, but to have an opinion you should have something to base it on, right? Also you deliberately omitted the rest of the sentence that shifted the annoyance upon the applications such as iPhoto.

Like I said, tech fundamentalism.

Or maybe just tech people who have the ability to look behind the flashy surface that blinds everyone ..

I submit instead that some people have a tech version of religious fundamentalism, which is itself a fervid belief in issues held sacred, as well as exceedingly poor boundaries and lack of baseline respect for others.

I don't like black olives on pizza. I've never felt driven to jump into threads to post about how bad black olives are on pizza, or how wrong people who like them are for doing so.

The Applehate exhibited by some is well beyond personal preference and is more of an unseemly preoccupation with others lives and choices.

It's official: 2 million iPads sold in less than 60 days...

To use a meme,

trendy and marginally useful device is trendy and marginally useful.

I don't need one, but I'm not going to hate on the people that have one UNLESS they tell me how much I need to get one.

I played around with one two days ago for about an hour.
It's nice for browsing on your couch. Also it was great fun to watch videos with a group of friends in a "beer-atmosphere".

Working with it? No thanks :)
*type*type*arm gets heavy*type*type ... oh need translation .. open browser? oops .. typing program gone .. *type*type* need address* oops .. program gone again!

so after playing around with it, he started to upload all his pics on it .. iTunes kept converting them for ~2 hours. then it started copying them but after a few minutes it said "an error occured" and none of the images was on the device  he started adding them folder after folder and it seems that worked .. but still
this morning he told me now has some kind of software that allows him to upload files via wifi .. but then you can only access it with that software  didn't really get why this is useful

yeah but you know .. the very same thing we did before with a netbook :) also the netbook has better speakers .. videos with sound were kinda painful.

it just a bit too expensive "just for fun" when you can have a real multi-purpose device for the same price.

oh also .. 10 finger typing is not really working ;)

So here's my update:

Spent almost a week out of town, half for a conference and the rest for my own leisure, and for the first time in years traveled without my laptop, but with the iPad.

Al things considered it went very well. Used the iPad for notes and emailing and so on during the conference very effectively. Missed multitasking some, but not enough to regret my choice. Again, the notebook style of the iPad makes it so easy to use in these settings that it was worth the trade-off.

For evenings it was useful both for getting work done, and for bed-time reading.

On the leisure end of things, more of the same. Easy to bring with me to hang out in cafes, fun to read comic books on and play Scrabble.

When I got home I was happy to get back on a laptop and bust loose a bit. But for travel, business or leisure, I don't think I'll be bringing the laptop again unless I expect to be using a lot of spreadsheets.

I have my iPad with me 24/7 these days. I read on it, I answer my emails, blog, check my stats and do my banking with it.

No, I can't do a lot of things on it that I need my laptop for... but for most things I need to do daily... this is not only fine, it's more convenient.

That's a nice summary of my experience. And I expect in a generation or two notepads like the iPad will replace my laptop altogether - the way laptops once supplemented desktops and then succeeded them.

Actually... since you programmed Facebook, can you tell me how to block Farmville?

Jesus, those people are annoying.

On the news Feed, click Hide, then Click Hide Farmville. This will block all posts regarding the game from any of your friends, but still allow you to see normal posts for all of them.

I foolishly looked in here to get an opinion of the iPad not to recreate the endless 'why I dont do Apple' argument.

I wanted a Kindle originally but figure the iPad is in color and has so much more ability than just reading a book. I disappear over the horizon for months at a time and for that I need several books... Now I can dowload several hundred and be prepared... and then while in some city or another I can use the 3G to connect.

Now I have laptops and home based MS products and will continue to have them. I doubt I will switch entirely to MAC simply based on the restricted "use our stuff or go piss off" attitude.

We will see how it goes. It sounds as if many of you are impressed with the niche you've plaed it in.

^^

mazda, I hope you won't mistake me for an "Apple fighter". I like the device because it works for me, and don't care who produces it. There are other tablets coming and I'd guess they will equally serve the purpose.

The iPad does have both iBooks and Kindle, and I think it may have another book App by B&N. My partner has used both Kindle and iBooks and likes both. Kindle has a much greater range of choices but iBooks is a nicer tool.
