I have a right to expect that a device I spent almost $1000 on will do what it claims to do. If it says it will ring a bell at 7AM on January 1, it should do so.

No there isn't. There was obviously a glitch with the switch to 2011. Shit like that happens all the time in the tech world. For example, check out Android's bug that sends text messages to the wrong number.
