iphone "jailbreaking". good idea?

had my iphone for a year and did get a replacement while under the one year warranty cuz it was kinda glitchy. So its my understanding that the warranty is only good for a year but do i get a new warranty since i got a new phone? If the warranty is up then i was thinking of jail breaking it. i know doing this voids warranty but if i dont have one what do i care. But are there any other concerns i should have with this jail breaking thing? and just out of curiosity why is it called that?
 
Yes. You should think deeply why you bought some kind of hardware that you need to "break" in order to be the master of the hardware that you purchased.
Since by doing so - you just support their idiotic stance on this topic ..
 
^ oh that story .. yeah well if you suddenly have an open machine it would be wise to set a password.
but hey .. people don't even manage to do that on their computer or anywhere else.

I jailbroke my first iPhone which made sense at the time but now it's not necessary for me. When the iPhone first came out there was no App Store and the device was extremely limited but as things progressed it became more and more of a pain to update the jailbroken iphone software. When I upgraded to the new model I was against cracking it because then I'd have to wait for any updates and all that jazz. I don't travel out of the country all that much and am happy with my AT&T service so there's really no need to jailbreak at this point.
 
Reasons to Jailbreak:

If there's something you specifically want your phone to do that it can't without jailbreaking

If you plan to use pirated apps

If you're a geek and just want to do it coz you can.



BTW, you only get 12 months warranty on the phone, regardless of replacement. That's true of almost any manufacturer.
 
I agree with Corny.

There's something terribly wrong when you have to "break into" your own property.

Get a Nexus One, nip/tug. Or possibly a Droid. Open source is the future of software.
 
Jailbreaking is still very useful.

Things I use that require jailbreaking.

iBlacklist - blocks calls from unwanted numbers or blocked numbers etc

Tethering - great for when you are away and lack an internet connection for your laptop

customization - different themes etc

There's no reason to be concerned about the warranty, if anything goes wrong you can always restore to the factory configuration in iTunes.
 
again .. why do you buy a phone that is limited in it's functionality by intend? why do you buy a phone where you even need to break the law to get what you want?
it's not like you don't have a choice.
just further proof how all the iCrap is just a choice of people wanting to be "hip" instead of people who actually care for what they get ..

I got the iphone because it works the best for my needs. I use a Mac for my computer so the interoperability is good, and the iPhone currently has by far the largest third party support, including apps that I use for work.

Jailbreaking is not against the law, at least in the US, can't speak for Germany. Consumers have the right to modify cellphones they own here.

That's not all it is, though that might be want an incomplete perspective makes it looks like.

The iPhone is an incredibly capable device that really has changed how I do things. I literally use it for everything, that's how much utility it has for me. Getting it had nothing to do with looking hip. I would not be able to replicate the totality of the use I get with it on any other phone right now.

They can see it that way if they want, but they are wrong.

There were several exemptions granted to the DMCA, one was that consumers were allowed to modify cellphones to connect them to another network.

Since you have to jailbreak the iphone to do this (and many have done so to do that), there is certainly precedent for the legality of that act.

Im actually perfectly happy with my phone. Sure it has its glitchy moments but what doesn't. i had verizon before AT&T and HATED IT!! so for no problems with at&t. the only reason i was asking about jail breaking was purely aesthetic. broke phone can change the background and icons and things.... im not to tech savy so all the rest of what ur talking about it over my head. again guys thanx for your input and i think i'll stick with what ive got!
 
There is nothing wrong with jailbreaking the phone.

What the iPhone basically is really is APPLE'S DEVICE. You pay to use it for service and just general use. Apple controls what it does and doesn't do via it's software updates, firmware, and restrictions. APPS were already in existent before the app store and even games. Hell probably around the time apple was doing their "Web widgets thing" or before that.

Even when apple would not allow Turn by Turn navigation apps jailbreak already had that.

The point of jailbreaking is not "Oh to use an iPhone I need to "break it". It unlocks the iPhones true potential and gives you options to completely control you're iPhone and truly make it yours. And have fun with it or geek it out.

I've jailbroken mine a few times. Although you have to be careful about WHAT you put on it. And if you add different sources that can be dangerous if you don't know the source well.

But you can ALWAYS restore you're phone and decide not to jailbreak or just start over. Even if you mess up the jailbreak process YOU CAN RESTORE. Unlike PSP where if you fuck up downgrading or hacking you are BRICKED.

In terms of you're phones safety the process to jailbreak and having a jailbroken phone is not dangerous. It all depends on WHAT you download and what you do to you're phone within jailbreak. But it's fixeable.

And serious. I fucking loved my Rock Band theme. Although the vending machine one is cool too. AND YES BLACKLIST IS GREAT FOR THOSE ANNOYING STALKERS. Teethering is great too. Where is the teethering that AT&T promised us? Still not here yet.

And apple is very hellbent on deeming jailbreaking illegal and putting a stop to it. They have tried with a few games on the app store to make some games not work on jailbroken devices.

But I heart pwnage.

Very few people who use the iphone feel a need to suck Steve Jobs' cock.

Very few people who use the iphone do not recognize that some of Apple's policies are stupid.

The courts are saying it is not illegal for phone owners to try to jailbreak their phones.

But that doesn't mean Apple is prohibited from bricking any and all jail-broken phones, either.

Nothing has changed. The government may allow you to jailbreak your iPhone, but Apple doesn't.

Actually it does. That probably would have been quite illegal already, since the contract never specified they would be able to do that, and the contract was with ATT anyway.

Apple would have no legal right to destroy all data on people's phones just because they didn't like what software the users were installing.
