Also, AT&T has a long-standing policy of unlocking their phones after the user has been a customer in good standing for 90 days. AT&T says this policy also applies to the iPhone. However, Apple refuses to provide the unlock codes to AT&T, to allow iPhones to run on other networks.
Apple believes in locking the end-users of its products tightly to the Apple ecosystem. When you buy an Apple product, it comes with lots of strings attached.
