Iran has released the two American hikers for half a million each.

I think they should serve out the full 8 years for sheer stupidity.

Of all places to hike they choose a war zone with no clearly defined borders. What a bunch of imbeciles! I say they deserved every bit of what they got!

How stupid can one be?!?

Uh, the Iranian border was a war zone?

Who were they at war with?

I don't know that the "hikers" should serve time for the CIA's stupidity.

I hope that they are well-compensated for their time in prison.

Perhaps you haven't heard. Iraq has been at war with the USA since 2003.

What, you think they really were CIA types?

Three Jews go "hiking" along the border between two of the most anti-Semitic countries on Earth. They happen to be two countries that hate each other and have been threatening each other across that same border for decades. The "hikers" do this at a time when one of the countries is at war with the nation of their citizenship, and the other is a sworn enemy. The hikers travel to this place from far away, because the Iran/Iraq desert is such an interesting and wonderful tourist attraction - especially in time of war!

They happen to get "lost" in Iranian territory (we don't know how deeply they moved into Iran). Iran just happens to be a country of intense world surveillance, given its involvement in international terrorism, its threats against Israel, and its attempts to built a nuclear weapon. At least one of the hikers is fluent in Arabic.

The hiker's ransom of $1.5 million is paid by the Sultan of Oman. Why? He's just a nice guy, and wanted to help out some poor, lost Jews.

Sorry, this story is just too ridiculous for me to believe. It really does read like a joke ("Three Jews go hiking along the Iran/Iraq border...").

^ I was skeptical about them being your average "hikers" all along. All kinds of question marks popped out of my head when I heard Oman paid the ransome...as if US does not have $1.5 million pocket change.

If they are your every day joe, then they are truly STUPID as the OP pointed out.

^ A fourth hiker did not get caught, because he remained in Iraq "with a cold" (in July, in the middle of the desert).

I suspect the three were relaying information to the fourth guy by radio or some other technique.

Because they are all Jews, it struck me they might have been working for Mossad, not the CIA. Mossad would not dare send Israelis to the Iran/Iraq border.

But Americans...

This article offers some perspective on the three hikers:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11270676

The three hikers have insisted that they were detained by uniformed Iranian border security forces, while inside Iraqi territory. Two Iraqis who witnessed the abduction of the three American hikers testify to this fact.

There is no war in the Kurd territory of Iraq.

The three hikers were living in Damascus, Syria when they set out on their hiking expedition into Kurdish Iraq.

The West receives more than sufficient information from Iranians, living in Iran on the development of Iran's nuclear weapon's industry without needing to despatch three hikers to infiltrate Iran. Satellites also provide very specific information on the development of the nuclear weapon's sites.

Iran has provided no information to the media that evidences any espionage activity by the three hikers, or any evidence that the hikers are connected with any Western intelligence agency.

That all three hikers are living in Damascus would make it likely that they would be knowledgeable, to some degree in Arabic.

The national language of Iran is Farsi.

The Sultan of Oman's contribution suggests that he wanted to reduce tensions. Oman is very much aware of the need to keep a tight lid on the ongoing tensions between the Sunnis of The Gulf, and Iranian Shias.

The Mossad is much more able at executing its activities than to send three hikers into Northern Iraq in order to infiltrate Iran. None of the hikers is able to communicate in Farsi. That would be a poor start for The Mossad. The Mossad employs agents who are fluent in Farsi.

Mossad enjoys a great reputation, despite the fact that they have suffered a number of spectacularly stupid failures, in addition to many successes.

Like all intelligence agencies.

What has this to do with your bizarre reasoning?

^ I don't think T-Rexx's reasoning is bizarre.

Wait...do you work for Mossad trying to discredit him here on JUB?

The Mossad employs Iranian Jews, fluent in Farsi and familiar with Iranian culture who have migrated to Israel over the last twenty years. They would make ideal infiltrators.

Do you really believe that The Mossad would employ three Americans, living in Damascus and probably already under surveillance by Syria's security service, who do not speak Farsi to infiltrate Iran for some espionage purpose, or another?

Conspiracy is never as simple as it seems. Ok, so they worked for the CIA. I also believe the ransome money came from US...channeling through Oman as a front. That way US can still maintain the official policy "US does not negotiate with terrorists."

If I find out US did pay for the ransome money and those are average hikers got lost, I would sue all three of them to pay back $1.5 millions tax money with interest to us Americans and with punitive damage of $1 million as an example for other stupid Americans who are thinking about pulling this shit again! :grrr:

The three hikers were living in Damascus, Syria when they set out on their hiking expedition into Kurdish Iraq.

The distance from Damascus, Syria to Suleimania, Iraq is 540 miles (869 km). That's a fair distance to travel to see the desert in the middle of summer.

I will defer to your expertise on Western intelligence on Iran, as I know nothing about it.

I had understood that the West is frustrated by our lack of intelligence in this regard, not the abundance of data you point out.

Farsi is the dominant language of Iran, but Kurdish Arabic is spoken in the region where the hikers were captured.

Sad that Oman has only ever intervened this once to keep the peace between Iran and Iraq. :(

All you are offering is fairy tale speculation without any foundation in fact.

Provide evidence to support your speculations and I will listen.

What has this to do with your bizarre reasoning?

It was you who claimed that "The Mossad is much more able at executing its activities than to send three hikers into Northern Iraq."

I merely point out that they are not always so flawless or sophisticated in the execution of their work - "Like all intelligence agencies," as you say.

Northern (Kurdish) Iraq is hilly and green.

If the hikers were infiltrators in Iran, as alleged by the Iranians then they would need to be fluent in Farsi to be able to further their activities. They are not Farsi speakers.

The Sultan of Oman intervened to lower tensions that are a daily fact of life between the Sunni states of The Gulf, and Shia Iran.

Your implication being that The Mossad would be stupid enough to send three non Farsi speaking Americans, living in Damascus (and probably under the surveillance of the Syrian security service - Syria being a close ally of Iran) into northern Iran to spy when The Mossad already employs Iranian Jews who would not attract any suspicions were they infiltrated into Iran.

Your suppositions are less than feasible.
