I know it isn't rarional, but I don't mind gay people using "queer" to self-identify, but our using "fag" bugs me. I guess it's just an emotional thing with me. Still I believe in free speech. So, if you are gay and choose to use the word "fag," I'd say you should be allowed to do so. I don't believe anyone, gay or straight, should be able to use that word as an insult. It's like the N-word for people of color.

I'd ban you. It's still not a word that has been reclaimed (and I haven't observed any movement to reclaim it) and in fact is still one of the most derogatory terms I can think of when refering to gay men.
So yeah, I'd avoid it. It just encourages its use by those who wish to verbally abuse us.

I'm a lot more comfortable calling someone i like a "fag" than i am calling them a "hag."

personally, "asshole" suits me just fine as self-identification, but I gratefully understand that certain others may have problems with me using that word like that.

it's just a word. i won't be affected by anyone else's term for me. and i don't go to the back door for anybody either. i'm proud of who i am. my head is up, no matter what the term is.

Perfectly fine to refer to yourself in any way you choose - there are a million fora to participate in.

I'm reminded of Groucho Marx - "I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member."

Apparently 'FAG!' is often condsidered to be an 'offensive' word in the US (but then, almost anything seems to upset overly-sensitive, PC assholes), but here in the UK the primary meaning of the word is a cigarette , so I doubt that the secondary meaning of GAY really carries as much punch.

Personally, I use the term 'FAG!' and/or 'FAGGOT! from time to time to refer to myself and others, but usually only when I'm being stupidly ironic about the PC brigade, or when when I feel like rattling the cage of some uppitty, queeny, nelly 'FAGGOT!'

Whatever ....I'm off for a quick FAG. :D

FAG is a cigarette, a pile of sticks for burning at the stake or hmm I forgot the last one.

re: my post #17. I completely retract my statement!

What was I thinking? #-o

'Fag' is a term that should never be used ...ever ...by anyone ...under any circumstances ...to refer to anyone or anything. [-X

Happy now?

Whatever ...I'm off for another fag.

Hoody, you've forgetten the fags and fagging of pubescent boys that happens in those glorious british institutions - public schools.

Here in the US, we're not sure whether that reference should make us cringe or start stroking.
A bit more info would be nice...
(*8*)

I am against us calling ourselves fags because to me a fag is something worse than being gay and I would only use it to offend someone... Not to identify them.

I'm with Hoody on this one - I associate 'Fag' with 'Menthol', 'Coffee' and 'Lager'

Do I find it offensive in reference to being gay? Pfft! No more offensive than being called a 'Bastard'' 'twat' or 'wanker' in a hostile maner.

That's all well and good, but in the US, 'fag' doesn't mean cigarette and hasn't for at least a generation strong. For a long while, it's been used as a demeaning term.

I'm not sure how you can criticize people for being offended by a word that has been used as a derogative during the span of their entire lives.

I'm not criticizing anyone for finding the term offensive, I'm saying I don't find it personally offensive i.e. it's just a word that doesn't effect me unless its said in a hostile manner just as I would any other derogatory insult. And the next time in America i'll use the word 'smokes' - how about that?

Guys !

C'mon...

I have to defend this point on JUB ??!!

Being called a 'fag' is something most of us have had to put up with...

Let's join together and stop this madness...

I consider it the same as when blacks use the N word to refer to themselves & friends..Only OK if its in the community. Otherwise a no-no.

I am not a fag nor am I queer. Unfortunately, "fag", preceeded by "fucking" is the last word some guys hear before being set upon by the poofter bashers. In Oz, the word has a derogatory meaning.

I think words have power, the slang word fag carries alot of negative power in the US . Using hurtfull words in an attempt to "reclaim" them is bogus. That includes the word "queer" .
