Is 4 GB ram still enough for today?

Is 4 GB of ram enough for todays programs and for Windows 7 Home 64 bit?
My notebook can go upto 8 GB but just was wondering that if today it's recommended to have at least 6 GB or more.

More RAM is always better... be that as it may; Win7 will be very happy working with 4GB.

Do you manipulate large files (high megapixel pictures or video imposition) ? These would benefit greatly from additional RAM.

Also, keep in mind that the current RAM may be occupying all available RAM slots. An upgrade may require setting some or all of the current RAM aside.

Are you buying a laptop or are you just upgrading a pre-existing system?

-When buying a laptop, also choose to buy your RAM separately it will end up being cheaper that way usually.

-as burke said, more RAM is always better; if cost is not an option go more maxing out RAM or at least put in total 8GB. The benefits of a 64bit OS is its ability to address above 4GB of RAM.
 
Well some people have said that to play StarCraft 2 you will need more than 4 GB of ram but is that true? Some said that in the middle of the game it will get laggy and you will need more than 4 GB or ram.
 
I play SC2 fine with 4GB of RAM on medium settings. I've had SOME lag during a few battles online against other players, but usually it's not bad or not lagging.

That is my experience, it might be that my graphics card (ATI Radeon 5870) compliments my RAM, I'm not computer savvy so I have no idea!

I find 2GB of RAM to be more than enough for the average computer user.

Don't let corporations make you feel you are being left behind. However, if you can afford more RAM and you have demanding computing needs (editing a video while burning a DVD and simultanously desiging something in Photoshop) by all means, get it.
 
Well all I know that I can get two 4 GB sticks for my notebook for $79 right now at Newegg.com website. I have DDR3 type ram. I noticed that if I have my game running in the background like Crysis or The Sims 3 I only use around 60% to 65% of the ram so I will have 40% left so maybe I don't really need more ram. I can't say I' am a power user but I' am a PC gamer.
 
Why limit yourself to 32 bits worth of RAM on a 64 bit system? As cheap as RAM is now, you should install all that your motherboard will allow.

This. RAM is dirt cheap. Unless you're poor (in which case you shouldn't be buying a computer at all), max out RAM.
 
After a point, increased RAM doesn't do much. That "point" depends on the user--what your needs are. Even if you're editing a lot of photos with Photoshop 4GB will still be plenty--a few complete images don't take up that much space.

Yes, there is something to be gained with more system cache, but there are decreasing marginal returns there as well.
 
If I was a gamer with 4g and I had slots for 8 g then I would add 2g more. I would also take into account the motherboard and graphics specs.

I swore I'd never give up XP...................I was wrong.
 
I really need to switch to Windows 7 cause I'm tired of Vista.

If my mac's didn't overheat like a motherfucker, I would easily love them, but since that isn't that case with any apple products. I have my custom built desktop as a backup. I really want to try out one of those Asus netbooks. They look pretty slick with some great specs, and are pretty cheap.

As for ram? Most programs don't even utilize that much ram until you start working with video, 3d modeling (rendering), and photo applications. So, for the common user you will probably not notice any difference if you have more then 4GB of ram installed.
 
Isn't the whole point of 64-bit to address large memory spaces? You only need a 64-bit operating system when you have greater than 4GB of RAM. There is zero advantage to running 64-bit with less than 4GB and it's just a marketing scam to make you think you're getting something "better". If you have a 32-bit operating system only the first 4GB of RAM is usable because it cannot address memory beyond that address range.
 
yeah, it has gotten better lately. but still. besides a few publishers the mac platform lacks games. a lot.
 
4GB is enough, but 8 would be better. 8 is better still when you have a beefy video card that has a lot of memory, since the video card can in turn use more system memory.
