What happened to the traditional Republicans of the 1950s?
 
They died. Then they started throwing wet noodles at the ceiling. Some turned out better than we'd hoped or expected (Nixon comes to mind), others were spot-on or worse (Reagan, Bush I). Then came Bush II. The Republicans have been mostly downhill since Lincoln, with the exception of Eisenhower, a new high point. Then they started going down again.

They got replaced by free spending democrats in the 1960's who didn't see a government tax and spend program they didn't like.

A "tax and spend" Democrat pays for things with current revenue.

A "borrow and spend" republican puts things on the credit card for future generations to pay.

Free spending republicans quadruple the deficit (Reagan), destroy the economy by slashing taxes for the wealthy while enacting huge government problems like Medicare Part D and get the country into two wars without paying for them.

Give me a tax and spend Democrat anytime. ..|
